Nanny: advice sought

Dear MNetters

We are needing to appoint a nanny and where we are the options are v v v thin on the ground.

There’s one agency and they’ve paired us with one girl who seems fine but I don’t know if we’re “settling”.

Those of you who have nannies how did you know she (or he) was the one and what things do I need to ask?

We chose a nanny who was done having kids for this very reason. It's a valid concern.

Is live in an option? You'd get a lot more candidates that way especially if you have a nanny pod type annex.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 18/10/2019 17:06

Are you sure you've understood correctly that the agency will be the nanny's employer, not you

Yes; no doubt. There aren’t many around outside London. To confirm you’ve got my location right too.

Ahh right okay. I have no knowledge of the Scottish system so no help I'm afraid.

I think the reason I asked the OP is I was worrying I might be effectively settling through lack of choice or availability meaning we wouldn’t get the chance to examine others.

I think that’s why I asked the “anything I should know” OP - but a full day has passed and I don’t know my own name anymore

You’re not settling tho if you need a nanny and there’s only one available! You’re just taking the only option open to you.

What would your plan b be if this nanny doesn’t work out?

Bluerussian · 18/10/2019 17:25

I'm sure the nanny will be fine, PaulH. Hire her for a trial period and see how it goes. Do let us know!

PippaPug · 18/10/2019 23:06

Plus we can’t run the risk of nanny getting pregers as we can’t afford the contingency for mat leave

Wow - can you believe that a nanny could want her own child?! If your struggling to get a Nanny now what happens if this nanny doesn’t work out?

I’m lucky that I have had very supportive bosses when being pregnant so far - hoping it stays the same!

So you have one eligible for nursery and one almost ready? Might be worth looking for a childminder instead, as they will deliver the children to and from nursery, and it is (imo) good for children to attend the nursery attached to their future primary school, if there is one.
