I'm re watching them all on Netflix and I love it.Yes it's not PC but it was a wonderfully subtle look at "normal" Northern working class family life.Liz smith who played Nana was brilliant.Anyone else a fan?

‘And afterwards they had a crepe’

‘I’m not surprised after all that food’

The new sofa is my favourite one, with David senior 'fair point well made Barbeara' 'this reclining is wearing me out!'
And the frozen turkey, the burnt Maris piper potatoes, triangles or oblongs Grin

BristolianBangers · 18/10/2019 11:37

My DM's family are from Lancashire. It's hard to express just how utterly true to life the Royle Family was! It's wonderful. As is Phoenix NightsSmile

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/10/2019 11:39

What I did notice from watching was how big Crunchies were back then! We are getting ripped off nowadays

Great comedy, loved it from the very first episode when it aired in 1998! 😂

Jim: “Get yer coat on, Barb!”
Barbara: “Ooh, are you taking me with you, Jim?!”
Jim: “No, I’m turning the fire off!” 😂

RuffleCrow · 18/10/2019 11:42

I love it but Jim is a horrible, lazy, smelly, sexist pig. And he was back then too.

I particularly love Caroline Aherne and also Jessica Stevenson's (as she was back then) guest star moments though.

BettysLeftTentacle · 18/10/2019 11:55

Not just relatable to Northern working class families, very relatable to London working class families to, or at least mine, right down to the singing and banjo playing. I love it, Caroline Ahearn was a pure genius but I confess I find it hard to watch now my Mums gone.

spiderlight · 18/10/2019 12:47

I loved the one where Denise does Christmas dinner. Cup-a-soup with a twist.

OutInOutIn · 18/10/2019 13:20

Getting the baby an intercom so they don't need to go upstairs, they can stay on the sofa and tell it to shut up Grin

I've been rewatching it too, only on series 2!

“I can still smell shit me”.

Scraping it off with a knife in the sink..

Gracefaith · 18/10/2019 13:38

Love royle family always looked forward to xmas specials pure comedy gold

Bezalelle · 18/10/2019 13:38

That bit where Dave is reading a trashy romance novel to Nanna.

"Luciana saw... a head...in the road."

Classic.

Mrsemcgregor · 18/10/2019 14:02

betty likewise, born and raised in Portsmouth in a working class family and just as relatable.

Everything from the way the house was decorated to the food they ate was straight from my own childhood.

It’s funny but also very warm. It’s not making fun of working class people, it’s celebrating them.

Marching into the living room singing the antiques roadshow theme and then placing bets whilst Nana talks about having a “cupboard full of them”. Absolute gold.

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 18/10/2019 14:04

I'm Mary, and he's Joseph, but we don't have Jesus, we have Cheryl.

MinesaPinot · 18/10/2019 14:17

I loved it all.

'What's your mam wearing for the wedding Dave'

'I don't know, I think she's got a suit from Marks'

'ooooh....Marks.....!'

The Queen of Sheba has me sobbing unashamedly every single time

user764329056 · 18/10/2019 14:19

Love it!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 18/10/2019 14:21

I still say 'can she have wafer thin ham Barbara' and 'there's been a murder' (in a really crap Scottish accent of course). Which leads me to the Pearl of Prestatyn

ChicCroissant · 18/10/2019 14:24

'thank you Barbara' gets me every time (Queen of Sheba) Sad Brilliant writing.

Gimmechipschocolateandcake · 18/10/2019 14:40

Yes I haven't seen it in years but I do love it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/10/2019 16:00

"Isn't judith Chalmers looking her age?" "I dont know! How old is she?" "I dont know"

The Royle Family has become classic comedy and it hasn't dated.

Craig Cash/Phil Mealey's Early Doors is in the same comedic genre and is equally as funny.

Got to go - 'crime won't crack itself' Grin

Fatshedra · 18/10/2019 16:25

The bowl of punch haunts me - from when Deniseand Dave did Xmas dinner.
