Mirena and bleeding

I had a Mirena put in at the start of August due to random, heavy bleeding. I didn't want a coil but the gynaecologist really pushed it and told me it was that or surgery.

Since it was inserted I have bled almost continually with horrific cramps. I'm about to ring and try to see my GP as I am absolutely fed up with the bleeding.

Has anyone experienced similar?

Yup. I had it inserted in September last year. Bled constantly for about 4 months after (between light spotting and heavy floods), and had cramps. Still getting cramps infrequently, so have been prescribed mefenamic acid for those. Bleeding every so often, still heavy, but not as frequent. Cramps worse than bleeding. I'd say the bleeding occurs every 6 weeks and alternates between heavy and light.

Its probably not as bad as pre-mirena but it's still painful.

I had mine done about a year ago, also due to very heavy periods. I didn't have the cramps but did have constant bleeding for the first couple of months.
Its definitely tapered off now, and I haven't had a proper period in months, not much more than occasional spotting tbh. For me sticking it out was definitely worth it, but I think everyone is different.

Yes, the doctor who put it in should have explained that bleeding/spotting is to be expected in the first couple of months. It normally settles down fairly quickly but it can last up to 6 months. If you are worried get checked to make sure it’s still in the right place and hasn’t slipped (causing cramps) but irregular bleeding is to be expected at the start.

I've just had one fitted for heavy periods and on both my GP and the GP that fitted it were clear that there could be random bleeding for 6 months and to give it at least that long before taking it out.

If I were you I'd keep a diary and then make a GP appt to review after the 6 months has passed if it hasn't settled down

Reassuring to know it really isn't just me. I saw the GP earlier and she's prescribed Cerelle for 3 months to try and control the bleeding a bit. If no improvement it'll be back to gynae and an ablation. Will see what happens over the next few months.

Sounds like a good outcome, fingers crossed it settles down for you!
