What age for dc to walk home from school?

Would it be ok for DD, age 9 and in Year 4 to walk home from school with DS, 11, in Year 7? I would get home from work within an hour of them getting home, we have nice neighbours and they get on well with each other and are sensible.

What age did you let your dc walk home from school?

Some children do this in my DC’s school, I’d say I’ve noticed at least ten in year 4, 5 and 6 walking home either alone or with older siblings.

It’s fine if you don’t live miles away and you know they can be trusted. My 8 year old would never allow it but I know my 9 year old would be fine with it if I let him.

My son's primary wouldn't let children walk home without an adult until Year 6 whereas my sister's school turfs the kids out on their own from Year 3!

My son is in yr4 and they need written permission. It has very much divided opinions. I absolutely will not allow it whilst my friends do. Your child, your choice really.

My DS (age 10) is in Y6 and walks home twice a week on the days he has clubs after school and is at home on his own for 20-30 mins before I get back from work. We're in the 3rd week of doing this, and so far, all has been fine!

He has been walking to school with a friend for over a year.

My youngest ds is 8 and hes been walking home since last year.Sometimes with his brothers, mostly on his own.I think its a great way to forge independence.

You could always start with meeting him half way and then taking it from there
