Caravanners, what do I need to buy

Planning to buy a towing caravan after Xmas sometime. It will just be me, husband and two small dogs holidaying in it.
We had a caravan many, many years ago but all the stuff we had then has long since gone.
So what do I need to buy to go in it?
Send me lists!

Divorce in a bag?

Aka awning

Oooh, we saw some people with gas BBQs that hooked up to the outside of their caravans. Seemed super fancy. Plus some sort of outside lighting if you want to sit out in the evenings.

We camp rather than caravan. But seeing some of them at the campsite this summer, we're considering getting a tow hook fitted!!!

Equipment wise we found the hoses that connect directly to the water in and out were great. No lugging barrels about.

Bedding and towels to live in the caravan. We stored them in vacuum sealing bags.

JulietTango · 17/10/2019 22:38

Please be careful of you do this that the water pressure into the caravan isn't too high.
Seen plenty of flooded caravans due to water connections coming loose.
A better way of doing this is having a water pipe connected to the side of a water barrel with a float, similar to the toilet ball cock attachment. Then the normal water pump into the caravan.
If the water pressure is too high with this set up all that gets flooded is the grass outside the caravan not the inside

Memory foam cut to fit your bed and used as a topper.
Throws for the sofas
We prefer a sun canopy rather than an awning.
Outdoor carpet for under the canopy.
Mats for wiping feet outside and inside.

First of all, I’d look around lots of different caravans to get a feel for what sort of layout you want / what are the deal breakers.

An Oven was our deal breaker, and not having the toilet next to our bed.

As for what you need to buy, wine glasses. We have uno and rummikub. Citronella candles. Solar power lights for outside. A shoe rack and clothes rail for the awning - wet coats dry quicker if hung up on the clothes rail.
Make sure you have a good sharp knife for food prep. A bag to carry toiletries to the shower block. Kettle, toaster. We have an outside gas bbq which comes in handy. Bedding, pillows and duvets which stay in the caravan.

We have a cadac BBQ that connects to the outside gas.
Two sets of toiletries so we don't need to pack those.
The sticky liner stuff for inside drawers and cupboards.
Torch.

Velcrose strap to hold down the button on showers.
Small cordless Hoover.
Low voltage kettle for sites with poor electricity.
We've put our own carpet down to keep the rugs that came with the van clean.
A sieve that squashes flat.

AnybodyWantAChip · 18/10/2019 00:05

Agree with memory foam topper - the caravan cushions can be brutal.

AnybodyWantAChip · 18/10/2019 00:07

If you are going to connect directly to mains water you will need an adaptor or you will blow the system with the pressure.

AnybodyWantAChip · 18/10/2019 00:09

Get motor movers if you are not good at reversing.

Blobby10 · 18/10/2019 08:21

Depends on your budget tbh. My parents (in their 70s) treated themselves to an all singing all dancing tourer, underfloor heating, extra thick sprung loaded mattress on the bed, power shower, integral microwave, self inflating awning, electric moving system thing - they love it!! They are in Scotland right now as its the first time they've had the heating to be able to caravan outside the summer months! Caravan was new - haven't asked what it cost but suspect in the region of £30k.

coldwarenigma · 18/10/2019 09:03

We have a tv, lots of dvds in case the site has poor reception.
Van with heating
Awning
Good quality pegs for the awning...not the rubbishy basic ones that come with an awning when you buy...
Electric mover

Thanks everyone. Great ideas and tips there.
We had a motor mover on our old caravan and would do so again as it was very handy.
