Does anyone else live in the BBCs Motherland?

And if so, do you have any ridiculous stories to share to make me feel like I'm not alone?
(Nc for this but I'm a regular)

Am talking about the BBC series Motherland... it hits so close to home and feels almost exactly like where I live.

Commonplace arguments over who feeds their children the healthiest food, going on whole school class camping holidays together and leaving select people out, running small business full of gossip. Ive got a love hate relationship with the community but currently feeling very much like 'Anne'....

I enjoy the show & recognise some of the characters but I'm probably most similar to Liz, so tend to stay out of it! I've not attended a drinks social yet because i'm not sure I can be bothered with the small talk.

I can also recommend Let down on netflix, it's Australian

I do. There are many shit shops here.

No, none of it resonates with me but I don't live in a city. When I watch it I wonder if my life would be more like that if I did, my DCs primary schools had none of the characters I see on there

AppleKatie · 17/10/2019 20:52

I met Amanda at a kids party this week. Hilarious.

I like to think I’m a Liz but sadly I’m not cool enough.

hairyturkey · 17/10/2019 20:57

@snottysystem well done for rising above it. I know staying out of it is best but the Fomo is strong!

Loved the let down- was even closer to my experience and I found it a difficult watch at times.

BrexitBingoGenerator · 17/10/2019 20:58

I LOVE this show-every line hits home in a way that nothing has since Catastrophe. Interestingly, series 2 got some quite mixed reviews but the negative ones were almost all from male journalists so I just don’t think they get it.

Think I’m Kevin but the female version 😳.

hairyturkey · 17/10/2019 20:58

@coconuttelegraph I'm happy to know that it is possible to raise children in areas where there are none of these characters! Must leave the city... I thought everywhere would be like it though. Great news.

RitmoRatmo · 17/10/2019 20:59

Yup. I want to be Liz but in reality I’m more Julia. Her rictus grin with her eyes brimming with frazzled desperation? That’s me, that is.

hairyturkey · 17/10/2019 21:00

@AppleKatie I think I'm probably quite a mix. Definitely some Ann, lots of Julia (just without the job- which is really the whole point of her character) bit of Liz and definitely a bit of Kevin Grin

hairyturkey · 17/10/2019 21:01

@RitmoRatmo frazzled, yes that's the bit of Julia that I am. Frazzled.

AppleKatie · 17/10/2019 21:07

😂 I fear I’m Anne with Julia’s job 😅

snottysystem · 17/10/2019 21:09

I often feel my parenting skills are below par eg we are reading Biff at bedtime, others are reading Ulysses. I then have a mad panic & order loads of "raising a genius" books & learning resources on Amazon & look into Saturday language school or music lessons. I tend to be over it though by the time the delivery arrives.

snottysystem · 17/10/2019 21:12

I often debate hosting one of the DCs party at McDonalds (the highlight of my youth) or having a delivery of it arrive at a party just to see the shocked faces. I'm not sure I want to be a leper though!

EmeraldIsle81 · 17/10/2019 21:24

I only just found this tv show so haven't watched the first series. The episode about working from home really struck a chord! I work from home and discovered a huge shift in that I had to do every domestic duty as well as my very demanding full time (plus all the extra hours) job! The constantly ringing doorbell to take in neighbours amazon deliveries drives me mad.

Hedgehogblues · 17/10/2019 21:40

No because I'm not crashingly middle class and I don't see parenting as a competitive sport

topcat2014 · 17/10/2019 21:45

I think I might be a pound shop Kevin

hairyturkey · 17/10/2019 22:43

@Hedgehogblues that's why it is so bloody awful sometimes. The competitive nature of these parents are something else. And the judging. Oh the judging!

Didn't breastfeed for 12 years? Shouldn't have had children.... didn't 'cloth bum'? ... you want the world to burn... working mum?... why don't you want to be with your children? .... stay at home mum?... lacks ambition and is a poor role model to kids.

It's honestly exhausting. But hey we have about five thousand baby cafes to get those soy lattes Wink
