Night vision driving glasses - any good?

8 replies

Or are they a bit of a scam? MIL doesn't like driving in the dark this part few years as she says she finds it so much harder to see properly. As the evening's are darker from late afternoon through the winter this means she's quite restricted. I'd say FIL is the same but wouldn't admit to it!

I've seen night vision driving glasses advertised and I think it would be a nice gift to put in their Xmas box. But are they really any good? Are some brands better than others? Any recommendations? Thanks

I'm going to follow this with interest. I have very poor eyesight (prescription is -7.0 in both eyes) so I wear contacts but driving at night is AWFUL. I can't see a damn thing and all the lights seem to spread out into huge lines which hurt my eyes. I started driving again in March after four years away from it and I'm very nervous about the nights drawing in now Sad

Surely for something important as vision and driving you need to ask an optician or specialist?

Aquamarine1029 · 17/10/2019 16:37

They need to be checked for astigmatism. It makes night driving very difficult.

They are a scam and strictly speaking likely to make an accident very hard to defend if I remember rightly.

Here is a relatively positive article on them.

Oh, I have a significant (or so I've been told) astigmatism. That will be why driving is awful at night!

These are worn over your prescription glasses as far as I know, they do something with the light and colour but I'm not sure an optician would need to check them?

I did worry they're a bit of a scam but wanted to check in case people have had a great experience with a particular type. Ah well...

@amusedbush

That's definitely why you have so much trouble. Astigmatism makes lights starburst and it's awful. If it's raining it's like being blind. I have nearly perfect vision, but I have a mild case of astigmatism so I have glasses for night driving. I wouldn't dare drive without them. Perhaps you could get a pair. It would be worth talking to your eye doctor about.

I've got some.
They're amazing during the day, and, because they fit over your glasses, they stop glare from the side too (like when the sun is shining through trees, it stops that strobe effect).
They're no good at night, great for that half second that someone's lights are in your eyes, but they make it dangerously dark otherwise. Possibly better on well lit roads, but makes me almost blind on dark country roads.
