What does your 10/11 year old DS do after school?

DS1 is 10 (11 in December) & I am struggling with after school with him atm. He has become very obsessed with Xbox, even though he is not allowed on it much (max 1 hour per night & not every night). It is the first question on his lips & he gets stroppy if not allowed/asked to come off. If not Xbox then he wants to watch trashy TV programmes such as Traffic Cops.

He is relatively bright & used to enjoy reading, but I have to make him do that now, which feels wrong. He also doesn't play much with Lego any more. It feels like a long time to fill, 5 hours or so between getting home & bedtime!

He does an after-school club (photography) & Scouts, which both fall on the same evening & he enjoys. He was occasionally going out round the block with a friend on his bike, but that hasn't been possible lately due to poor weather & darker evenings soon. If he has friends round, they tend to want to play Xbox all the time.

I am thinking that I will take all 3 Dses to the village library one or two days after school each week, hopefully this will reignite his love of reading.

What else do your Dses do after school? I'd love some inspiration!

Hi op we don't get home from school until about 6.15pm so once we've had dinner, shower, checked if homework needs to be done and maybe half an hours you tube etc it's time for bed. For DD10 not me!

Both of mine did a lot of clubs at that age. Gave the evening a bit of structure.

They had free use of screens after, stopping an hour before bedtime. My rule has always been homework, clubs, music practise, no screens over dinner.

I do feel like the evenings are just too long for him & he's gearing up for senior school now.

It's difficult for him to do many clubs because I have to also take his 2 younger brothers into account. It's mostly just me with them as DH works long hours, so I have to be able to get them all to & from any clubs. He did want to do table tennis but it clashed with the others' swimming lessons & I can't be in 2 places at once! He is asking about starting goalie training every Friday, which I could manage. It would mean that we wouldn't have a day with no activities, but maybe it's what he needs.
