Could I have an STD?

I have another thread running in Relationships so I hope no one minds me starting another.

I have been with my husband for about 12 years. In the early months of our relationship, I was very young and going through a really difficult time in my life and I was unfaithful to him on numerous occasions. I had an STD test which came back that I had chlamydia and we were both treated. I don’t think I slept with anyone else after that infection but I can’t say that for 100% because I can’t remember that time in my life with a lot of clarity. In over 11 years that have passed since then, I have been completely faithful. DH and I went on to have 2 children and I know they test for some STDs in pregnancy. I have also had swabs done by the GP 3 times. Actually, twice by the GP, once by my midwife. Twice was for suspected thrush and once was for lower abdominal pain. The swabs came back positive for thrush the first 2 times and positive for a bacterial infection the 3rd time (I remember the word E-coli being mentioned). Anyway those swabs didn’t pick up any STD’s but I don’t know if a GP/midwife would have had them tested for them? I just wondered if there is anyone on here who may know more about this and may be able to help ☺️ Thank you.

Have you been tested at a GUM clinic?

The only way to know is to get tested again. But I imagine it's unlikely you have anything now as the tests for STDs in pregnancy are pretty comprehensive.

TrySleepingWithABrokenHeart · 16/10/2019 13:08

I haven’t been tested at a gum clinic since the time I tested positive for chlamydia. Since then I’ve had my 3 sets of swabs. 2 by the GP and one by the midwife.

Rushian I don’t believe they test you for chlamydia or gonorrhoea in pregnancy.

@TrySleepingWithABrokenHeart I would go and be tested anyway, they are the experts!

Honeybee85 · 16/10/2019 13:15

I think they are legally not allowed to check you for any condition/disease that you have not given them explicit permission for to check so I would definetly check again.

TrySleepingWithABrokenHeart · 16/10/2019 14:16

Oh really honeybee? The time when I had lower abdominal pain/ twinges, they just did swabs and didn’t discuss possible causes with me so I guess that goes against what you are saying? Although that was a while ago so the rules may have changed. I really feel as though they may have tested STD’s then but obviously I can’t be sure.

I guess it's possible that different NHS Trusts do things differently, but in pregnancy I was offered screening for hep B, syphilis, HIV, and chlamydia (and some other stuff).

Honeybee85 · 16/10/2019 14:52

I am not 100% sure OP but I believe in most countries with strict laws on privacy (so actually whole EU) I believe this is the case Smile.

over50andfab · 16/10/2019 15:53

OP if you had told your GP/midwife you could be at risk of having contracted STDs you might have been tested for them. Otherwise they would probably not have done so.

As you are unsure after contracting chlamydia if you continued to put yourself at risk of other STDs then this is a possible concern for those not already tested for during pregnancy).

Also take into account that there is a window period for STDs, where they might not show up on tests until antibodies have developed.

The only was to know for sure is to visit a GUM clinic. Some have a postal facility where you’re do the tests at home

over50andfab · 16/10/2019 16:06

OP I’ve just read your other thread. Don’t beat yourself up. Think of the person you are today, coloured by the past but now a much stronger person.

There’s a very good chance you will not have any STDs whatsoever. You mention thrush in the past and something else...possibly bacterial vaginosis? I’m sure getting tested will provide conclusive reassurance for you that the past is firmly where it belongs.

Take care

Thank you so much over50. I really hope you’re right. Fingers crossed I get the results I’m hoping for and that I can find a way to move forward from this. Everyone’s been so supportive of me on here today. It’s been really touching. I just need to find a way to believe the kind things everyone has said. I’ve got some work to do but hopefully I’ll get there eventually ❤️
