Orange stuff in nappy

I'm a bit stumped...tonight when I was changing my LG after nursery she had an orangey coloured stain in her nappy (at the front end) and orange stuff on and inside her foof. Now I did notice her bits were a little red, a wee bit nappy rash, so I'm thinking have they used some nappy rash ointment that I don't use? I have provided them with metanium to use in case she gets a rash. But that is a obvious yellow paste...this stuff on her tonight is distinctly orangey-brown...does anyone know what it could be? I'm going to ask them tomorrow about it.

Ask them tomorrow.

Could she have eaten a crayon?

BrokenLink · 15/10/2019 19:34

How old is she? Does she eat food?

Does it look like brick dust? It could be a sign of dehydration.

Legoroses · 15/10/2019 19:37

It's called urates. Mostly happens in newborns but can happen later.

BertieBotts · 15/10/2019 19:37

I was going to say brick dust as well - that's urate crystals.

winniesanderson · 15/10/2019 19:47

I was going to say urates too. Encountered them randomly in my 16 month olds nappy a few weeks back. She still breastfeeds when we're at home and doesn't always drink well at nursery so I put it down to that. I encouraged extra fluids for a few days and haven't seen it again.

MammaBell · 15/10/2019 20:14

Thanks everyone for your advice, I'd never heard of urates before! She's 18 months old and on solids. At home she is frequently sipping on water throughout the day and drinks at meals/snack times. She's only on one bottle at day - for bedtime. I'm surprised she could be dehydrated. She has been poorly lately as had croup 2 weeks ago and then the cold, but is over the worst of it now. Maybe she's not getting enough fluids at nursery. She's with me all day tomorrow so I'll make sure she give her plenty drinks and will speak to the nursery.
It's dusty or any texture, it was like an orange balm is you know what I mean?! Confused
I'll see how her nappies are tomorrow and can always call the health visitor or doctors to check her out. Thanks again ladies for your help x

Urates are normal in newborns, but not at 18 months. It sounds more like the colour of her poo (possibly mixed with metanium), and they have not cleaned her very well. Or maybe some playdough fell into her nappy?

cherryblossomgin · 16/10/2019 07:25

Could it be poo? The orangey brown could be from an orange food and they missed a bit when cleaning up or moved it to the front accidentally.

MammaBell · 16/10/2019 11:51

So I spoke to the nursery, the manager answered the phone. She looked into it and she reckons that it was poo that had not been wiped away from in between her creases (in her foof) as she had a soiled nappy change 10 minutes before she was picked up by my husband to come home last night. She said it was one of the newer staff whose only recently qualified, doesn't have kids, who had changed her nappy. So the manager is going to personally give her some 1-2-1 coaching at nappy changes for the next few days to ensure she knows how to thoroughly wipe every fold and crease. I'm relieved it's not dehydration, she has frequent wet nappies and loves her wee cup of water, she carries it everywhere about the house. I am a little disappointed though that the nursery staff don't know how to proper clean up a soiled nappy...like what if this has happened during the day on other occasions? It's not just nappy rashes that are the worry, but urine infections too! I actually noticed a smudge of brown poo in her foof last week after nursery, it was obvious to me that time that it was poop as it was greeny brown and poopey texture, and I politely spoke to the room leader about it the next morning - she genuinely apologised and assured it was a one off and wouldn't ever happen again...Hmm
