If you start a book, do you read to the end, even if you aren't keen on it?

I have been looking at my kindle library and there are quite a few books that are 5% read but a greater amount 95% and over.
But, I read an article in a magazine from an editor that no matter how bad a book, she finishes it as she needs to find out what happens.
I see that books are her career and she is passionate about books, but nothing can persuade me to finish something I am bot enjoying.

A book has to be REALLY shit for me to put it down. The only problem is that if it's one I'm not that keen on, I'll read a few pages in the evening, then go off and do something else, so it takes forever. If I really like a book, the TV will be off, and I'll read until my partner gets bored of the quiet haha.

No way.

The only book I've not finished is the last Harry Potter.
In mitigation, I was given the set for Christmas and by the 5th book I was finding it hard going very same-y, and I gave up on the last book (Deathly Hallows I think) because I had to cook Boxing Day lunch and never picked it up again.

Usually I do. And then quite often I'll write a review. My feeling is that the author has put in a lot of effort to write so I ought to reciprocate. But I write books as well so I'm probably a bit biased...

My only exception is where an author clearly hasn't made an effort. No plot, many typos, descriptions of places the author has clearly never been to... Then I give up.

I've only ever abandoned one book once started. I can't remember who wrote it now but it was such an awful first chapter, full of gratuitous, horrific violence, that it was actually quite disturbing. I then had the dilemma that I couldn't pass it on to friends or the charity shop because of the sick content so I burned it Shock. It was honestly evil.

I don't bother finishing all the books I start, but I do finish most of them. That's mostly because I'm quite adept at choosing books I stand a good chance of enjoying. Any time I try to read a book that's "high brow" or a "classic" I get frustrated and stop reading after a few chapters. I read a lot, but mostly sci fi or fantasy, with the odd psychological thriller or chick lit thrown in.

My reading is about enjoyment, not about improving myself or pushing on through something I'm not interested in.

I have done

I found Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so boring it was like torture but I finished it

Some if I can’t get into in the first chaoter I don’t bother

A few books I haven’t finished and I still wonder what the ending was and plan to return to reading them one day

ShippingNews · 16/10/2019 00:31

No, never. As PP said, life is too short to force yourself to read something. Just because the author thought it was good, doesn't mean that you have to agree with them.

PickAChew · 16/10/2019 00:32

Nope. Life's too short.

PeachesPlumsPears · 16/10/2019 01:38

No, never and that's why there are a lot of books on my kindle. I keep them just in case I change my mind deleting them feels like wasting money

Ebonyandivory2 · 16/10/2019 01:52

Nope. If I really hate it I’m not finishing it. My ex bought me a book and it was the worst I’d ever read. Didn’t have the heart to tell him so googled the plot and told him I loved it Blush
