If so do you find you have a come down when you stop taking it? Once my period is gone (so I will have been off of 5 days at this point) I'm totally depressed? Crying at the drop of a hat?

Not sure you should be going on and off that med? It takes time to start working and coming off suddenly can cause horrendous side effects. I would check with your GP. Good luck

MmeBufo · 15/10/2019 18:14

I've taken it before, it was a long time ago but I'm pretty sure it should never be prescribed in this way. you must feel utterly dreadful. Please see your GP.

IIRC it takes 2-4 weeks to start work and for the worst of the side effects to wear off. Stopping should be tapered and, again causes a number of weeks of side effects.

I have PMDD and take 100mg of Sertraline cycle days 1-14 and 150mg days 15-28.
Despite the fact that SSRI cycling is a proven remedy for this condition and a recommended treatment option, I expected a come down but in fact it has been utterly life changing for me.
If it is doing this to you, you need to return to the prescriber to discuss.

I took Prozac for some years to manage my PMDD. Was life changing. I took 20mg daily. I think you need to return to your GP for a reassessment and perhaps take a low dose daily. Took about 6 weeks to really start to make a difference.

As an aside when I fell pregnant I stopped taking the Prozac and EBF DD2 so couldn't go back on the medication when my feckin' period returned when she was 6mo. Now have a mirena coil which manages the PMDD. Might be worth considering if you don't with to get pregnant.

Yy cycling is a thing, but I've never heard of on/off use off SSRIs. Is that really a thing too?

Signifyingnothing · 15/10/2019 18:26

My GP told me to try this and I noticed not one change in my PMDD. The only thing which has helped had been going back on the pill. I'm 45.

Hederex · 15/10/2019 18:34

Yes. If I hadn't already been on Sertraline, the plan would have been to take an SSRI only for the 14 days.
It's been amazing for me despite my scepticism, and ideal because I can't use anything hormonal.
But if it doesn't work, there are other options.

GymKitJen · 15/10/2019 20:39

yeah the prescribing for 2 weeks is some recommended course of action. It really makes a difference for the 2 weeks I take it. I coulda cried all day today. It's flipping impossible to get a gp appointment though

Yep was prescribed for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off but too chicken too take them as terrified of side effects. But it’s great to read all these positive stories.

GymKitJen · 15/10/2019 21:05

Milo it really does help, I just don't know if This come down Is related, it doesn't happen every month

Interesting to read this as I’ve been started on sertraline to manage similar symptoms but experienced awful stomach symptoms so stopped. GP said many people do time on and off but she didn’t see how it would work with the way the meds work. Interesting the mirena has been successful for some too...

chocafrolic · 15/10/2019 21:12

Yes I tried it for about a year but kept messing up when to start taking them each month which triggered emotional pmdd rollercoaster. I now take 20mg dose every day and it’s changed my life.

MmeBufo · 15/10/2019 21:34

Thanks Headerex, we live and learn.

I also found it very helpful indeed. I do seem to have pretty strong side effects going onto, increasing dosage and coming off SSRIs but they're so worth it when needed.
