No-cook dinners

We won’t have a kitchen until next week. No worktop, no microwave, no oven, no hob, not even a mixing bowl. Other than takeaway, what can I serve for dinner? None of the dc will eat salad!

Can you not have a microwave, kettle, etc in a different room? That's what we did when our kitchen was out of action

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/10/2019 13:25

Kettle, yes. Didn’t have a microwave previously and won’t until the new built in one is fitted at the end of the week. Unfortunately I can’t think of anything to make with a kettle alone.

Rotisserie chicken hot from the supermarket, crusty bread - make lovely sandwiches and add salad etc for adults. Fruit salad for after.

Ready cooked quiche with potato salad (not strictly salad so might pass the dc's scrutiny!)

Instant noodles pimped up with some of the left over chicken and very finely shredded veg - pepper etc

Stuff from the deli counter of the supermarket - cooked meat (ham / turkey etc), cooked potatoes - wedges. Sausage rolls etc

fish and chips!

Do you have a slow cooker?

dontdoitop · 15/10/2019 14:46

Buy a slow cooker!

wowfudge · 15/10/2019 14:49

Buy a plug in induction hob - IKEA have a cheap one and I got us one from Amazon.

Imreallytrying · 15/10/2019 14:51

Toasties

funmummy48 · 15/10/2019 14:52

You need a slow cooker I think. Or to borrow a camping gas stove from someone. We used ours in tandem with our slow cooker when our kitchen was being done.

LifeSpectator · 15/10/2019 15:24

you could do couscous with just your kettle, to accompany any deli items you and kids like, like quiche, sausage rolls,

Or hot food counter items you can pick up easily at supermarket, mine does baby potatoes and wedges, if you live close enough to get home while still warm , as well as items like rotisery chicken which can be eaten warm or cold.

you could do wraps with whatever fillings the kids like with tortilla chips and salsa on side,

with toaster you could do pitta pockets serve with houmous if kids like or stuff with a bit of grated cheese and bought cooked chicken, tomatoes etc

nothing much exciting there but least it fills a few days , have you any family or neighbours nearby that would let you borrow an oven, the probelm is also wioth no kitchen cleaning up becomes a pain to i think if it was me for just a week id do the minimum food at home.

LifeSpectator · 15/10/2019 15:25

oh just had a thought do you have a bbq in which case you coudl do sauasages outside and put them in bread rolls

noenergy · 15/10/2019 15:58

A camping stove is great to have in these situations.

Totaldogsbody · 15/10/2019 17:40

Buy a George Foreman grill you can cook chicken and put it in Pitta with salad, cook sausages anything that can be grilled and it doesn't take long becayse both sides are cooked at once.

Totaldogsbody · 15/10/2019 17:45

Sorry forgot no salad. I use my grill a lot, its also great for toasties.

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/10/2019 17:47

I don’t really want to buy more kitchen gadgets as no space to store them.

Tapas. tesco etc usually do a any 3 for x amount, choose from olives, Spanish omelette, falafal, olives, sun dried toms.

Crusty bread / crackers and a selection of different types of cheese.... Brie, Stilton, Cheddar, roulade.

EggysMom · 15/10/2019 17:51

Do you have any friends you can borrow from, perhaps they have a slow cooker they could loan you for one meal during the week, or a George Formby (!) or sandwich toaster for a different meal.

PickAChew · 15/10/2019 17:52

Send them to the charity shop when you've done with them.

stucknoue · 15/10/2019 17:53

Rotisserie chicken from the shop (they have potatoes wedges at our supermarket too). I put my microwave on the landing when we did our kitchen and used my slow cooker

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/10/2019 17:58

Tapas and rotisserie chicken sound good, bbq is a possibility when (if) it stops raining. No friends to borrow from unfortunately.
