Just put some air in at a garage, the machine will bleep when your tyres are correctly inflated. Otherwise your tyres will wear badly.

Fstar · 14/10/2019 23:03

Or buy a pump with electronic gauge, it will tell you pressure and u just set pump to correct amount and off it goes

MajesticWhine · 14/10/2019 23:06

Ok, I'll have a go tomorrow.

I got stressed about how to do this the first time. It's actually simple! The correct pressure for my car (maybe all cars?) is on the inside of the petrol cap door. It's so simple.

Put your money in and then put the right pressure into the machine (is only up and down buttons) .. take the dust caps off your tyre, put the attachment thingy over the outlet and the current pressure will display on the machine.

Hold it tightly on the outlet and you'll see it rise to what it should be. Then as others have said it will beep..

It's good to know how to do these things!

LtJudyHopps · 14/10/2019 23:12

Google what pressure your tyres need. Go to the garage, put money in, the pressure and pump away!

safariboot · 15/10/2019 01:50

On my car it's on a label on the driver's side door frame. Should also be in the vehicle handbook.

Kinsters · 15/10/2019 01:53

I hate doing this too MajesticWhine, I get my husband to do it for me. They'd check it when you get your car serviced but I think you're supposed to do it more regularly than that.

DramaAlpaca · 15/10/2019 01:53

It's really easy to do it yourself, honestly.

sleepyhead · 15/10/2019 01:54

Air is free at Sainsbury's petrol stations so I always check mime when I'm there.

ScorchioScorchio · 15/10/2019 01:56

My suggestion would be to check what pressure your tyres should be before you leave home (and write them down - I keep mine in the glovebox for quick reference). It saves you from feeling under pressure and getting in a flap. The pressure will be shown in either bars or psi (you can switch the machine between to two measures) and there will most likely be a different pressure needed for the front and back tyres. The table that shows the pressure you need will be in your car's manual and mine is also inside the door frame of the driver's door. Also, take the dust caps of all of the tyres and set your pressure before putting the money in to make the machine start.
Once you've done it for the first time you'll wonder what you were worrying about!

mrbob · 15/10/2019 02:21

It is really simple I promise. Years back I made my brother come with me the first time so I knew I was doing it right. Why don't you take some one with you this time and then you can do it yourself. It takes about a minute and if you drive you should really know how to do this!

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 15/10/2019 07:04

I have a pump I keep in the boot. Check mine regularly. You can buy them in Argos quite cheaply. I also have jump leads but im scared if them!

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 15/10/2019 07:07

Ah thanks I'm gonna woman up and go to the garage today.
Will report back triumphantly.

In my car the tyre pressue measurement are on the door frame. Varies from car to car.
If you google your make and model you will find out what they should be.
When you go to the machine take the caps off first.
Input the required pressure.
Put money in.
Take hose then shove nozzle into the tyre inlet. Can be a bit fiddly but youll hear the change in tone and the pumping sound as air is put in. The machine should pump the air in then beep when at required pressure.
You should also see the pressure on the display but thats sometimes hard when bending over and trying to peer round the car.
Do all the tyres, then go round and put the caps back on

JasonPollack · 15/10/2019 09:29

I learnt to do this recently and was immensely proud! Take tissues or something to wipe your hands because they get really dirty touching the hubcaps etc. Good luck OP!

c3pu · 15/10/2019 09:33

Pro tip - take the dust caps off before putting money in the air machine.

newmummy8789 · 15/10/2019 09:43

Kwik fit and other tyre places usually do a check for free...get them to show you how to do it.

I go there in between doing it myself because their machines are much more accurate

MajesticWhine · 15/10/2019 21:19

Well I did it. But...
Was feeling very pleased with myself. Worked out the correct pressure from dozens of different settings pictured in a diagram stuck on the inside of the car. Put the money in, connected the thing, waited for the beep. Did all four tyres, wiped u hands and got on with my day. But on the way back from work car was still giving me the warning message.
Anyway turns out I have misread the chart, I have set the tyres to 29 and 27 psi instead of 2.9 and 2.7 bar (43 and 40 psi) so I have actually let the tyres down. Feeling like a fucking idiot Grin. The car was driving ok Confused. DH huffed off to the garage this evening and re-did it making me feel even more pathetic than I did to start with.
Oops - will try again next time.

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 15/10/2019 21:21

Haha, sorry but that's funny Grin It's the sort of daft thing I'd do. At least you had a go, and you know for next time.

MajesticWhine · 15/10/2019 21:22

In my defence this was the diagram. So although I acknowledge it was my mistake, it wasn't completely obvious which settings to use.

Well done for having a go though. And at least you will know what to do perfectly for next time. Think of it as a first try! I stick the pressure numbers to the service book on a post it note as I always forget them.

safariboot · 16/10/2019 01:07

Dang, yeah, that's a complicated one. A dozen different kinds of tyre listed there.

ratspeaker · 17/10/2019 17:13

Well done.
You will know and remember next time
