Black bathroom taps/shower etc - bad idea?

I really love the look of back bathroom fittings for my new bathroom but is it a really bad idea? Does anyone have these? What are they like after months/years of use? What are they like to clean etc etc

How hard is the water? Where I live it would look awful due to limescale very quickly.
Also who would be using it? And how good are they at wiping down after themselves?

TottieandMarchpane · 14/10/2019 13:13

The fingerprints alone would drive me mad. Not a relaxing sight when you’re having a soak.

BlastEndedSkrewt · 14/10/2019 13:21

depends - do you have a water softener or live in a very soft water area otherwise limescale & soap scum would be awful

We had black taps etc. in our last house - they lasted fine and didn't get fingerprints (they are matt black, not shiny). Didn't get bad limescale marks either and the water was pretty hard. Easy to clean IME, better than anything shiny. And they did look swish - we kept the rest of the bathroom quite plain so that they were a feature.

I haven't put them in our new house despite doing a renovation, because I personally think they are a bit dated now. They were 'cool' a decade ago but they are everywhere now. I think in 10 years time they might be looking a bit naff. But if you like the look and are happy to live with it for the life of your new bathroom, don't let the practicality points put you off!

We inherited a black sink. Bloody hate it as it shows any hint of line scale. I love the look of black taps but if you live in a hard water area I think you'd be mad and they may date too.

janj2301 · 14/10/2019 14:54

In my kitchen the black sink is awful, impossible to clean, badly stained now, but the black tap still looks lovely and we're in London, very hard water.

ShivD · 14/10/2019 14:56

I have a black tap in my kitchen and it’s fine (as is our sink), we’re in west London so pretty hard water. In fact, the black rap is easier to clean than the stainless steel ones in the bathrooms.

notso · 14/10/2019 14:59

We have black taps and shower in the en suite. They're much easier to clean and stay looking clean longer than the shiny chrome in the main bathroom.

RoseMartha · 14/10/2019 15:10

Personally no but it is up to you. Will show finger marks more than normal.

TheSky · 14/10/2019 16:13

Thanks for the replies. I think the thing that's holding me back more is the fact that it's a passing fad and will be extremely dated by the time we sell the house. But then I guess most things would be... hmmm

I suppose it depends how soon you'd be thinking of moving.
If it's just a tap and a shower head they can be changed relatively cheaply and easily.

notso · 14/10/2019 16:39

Will show finger marks more than normal.
Ours don't show finger marks but do show water marks.

Ilovesweatybollocks · 14/10/2019 19:58

If you've got hard water I'd steer well clear of black. One of the apartments where I work has a black bathroom and it never looks clean because of the lime scale, tried everything to get rid of it but it's not going anywhere and it really does look aw

Ilovesweatybollocks · 14/10/2019 19:59

Sorry I meant awful Angry
