My lovely brother and his family are coming over for a week from down under.

For the first evening, so it's more relaxing for everyone (including me!), I am going to do a help yourself style buffet that we can pick at over the course of the evening.

I was thinking of:
a delicious super garlicky butterbean, tomato & red onion salad;
Greek salad;
nice crusty baguettes;
cold meats;
smoke salmon;
cheese board.

Plus drinks.

Plus some form of dessert – maybe a pavlova and also fruit.

Is this enough? Would you suggest anything else?

There will be x7 of us.

Not pavlova for dessert. It's done to death here (Australia).
Something typically English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish, perhaps using a fruit like gooseberries that's not common here.

I still remember with with fondness the gooseberry pudding and custard that I had in London decades ago. Yum Yum Yum. I love stodge. But that sort of thing is probably completely out of date nowadays.

Sorry.Repetition.

I love the butter bean salad idea but I’d add more carbs like potato or pasta salad

Maybe Eton mess for pudding? Easily prepared in advance and is very tasty

Aridane · 15/10/2019 07:10

If I have the potatoes mentioned above (baby new potatoes drizzled in olive oil, with salt and rosemary', criusty bread And quiche , will that be enough carbs?

Maybe two desserts to carry on the buffet style and make them things that will keep a few days so you don't waste anything.

Cheesecake!!

Or, bowls of whipped cream, jam, strawberries (if they are still ok) and scones!! Very British and comforting!!

Aridane · 15/10/2019 10:27

@Nottobesoldseparately - you say cheesecake is your speciality dish. Do you have a recipe?

Or a preferred shop version?

My most requested one is a food good lemon one.

I tweak it a little sometimes add double cream and limes. You honestly can't go wrong.

Not sure if the link will work as I've forgotten how to do clicky links as it's been ages since i posted one.

Oh - that actually looks quite straightforward - thank you!!

i would add BBC Good Food ultimate chocolate brownies to your dessert menu - they are always a HUGE hit at gatherings here.

@Talcott2007 - I wanted to say thank you for the baked mini potatoes with rosemary, salt and olive oil. They went down a treat. Of a whole bag, only a few were left over.
