Keeping whites white!

Heyduggeefordays · 13/10/2019 18:16

DP is a chef and regularly drags home all his chef whites to be washed. He does them all himself as I’m not trusted near them after not noticing DD’s red tights were still in the machine.

He usually bungs them on the the longest wash setting at 90 degrees and adds a healthy dollop of bleach to keep them white.
My only issue with this is even after running an empty cycle afterwards i’m still finding bleach spots on the rest of our clothes after they’ve been washed.

Anyone any suggestions on keeping them pristine white without bleaching them? Any help would be wildly appreciated by him as i’ve decreed he will be replacing everything that ends up marked from here on out. Grin

Just loads of washing detergent works for us.

No direct experience but I might try 'rinsing' the whites with a short low temp wash after the main cycle, to be sure.

Can you persuade him to use a bit less bleach? I can't imagine the whites will last very long if he's using a lot and some appears not to be completely rinsed out?

I've never used bleach in my washing machine and my white clothes always stay white. I never put anything other than white items together in the machine. DD's teacher once commented about how white her school polo shirts stayed and asked what I used. I just use soap powder.

I think there is an Oxy Action powder you can add to a whites wash which claims to keep whites brighter which would probably do less damage than liquid bleach.

I used Vanish powder for my white towels when I had a B&B. But they weren't (generally!) covered in food stains.

Yes, get him to do a rinse cycle once the whites have been taken out, then do your own washing.

I'm crap at washing, but my children's school shirts are quite impressive (even my MIL commented on them).

Only wash whites with other whites.

Spray vanish on any stains before washing.

Add a scoop of stain remover powder to the wash.

Once every half term, I put their shirts on a 'stain' wash programme in the washing machine (with detergent and stain remover). It's essentially soaking the clothes for 3 hours.

Every half terms I put them in the bath to soak in some whitener

He shouldn’t use bleach it stinks and burns people lungs - horrid stuff

For really white whites they need to be hung outside in the sun for a natural bleach effect

Vanish Oxi, not wash and lots of biological washing liquid.

Bleach rots fabric and causes yellowing eventually. Don't put it in a washing machine.

Daz powder is very effective and doesn't need a 95° wash. Also good for soaking whites to remove stains.
