Is it possible to paint the brass trim and grate on a coal effect gas fire?

Previous owners of our house had a fire place installed - we don't like any of it but removing it will cause more issues than it's worth for now as the hard wood flooring has been fitted round the hearth and we don't want to replace it and it's not possible to patch it with new wood.

Once we get our kitchen replaced, we should be able to harvest some of the flooring from there to be able to patch and refinish it.

In the meantime, the biggest issue is that the trim and grate is brass and everything else in teh room is silver/chrome coloured.

We never use the fire, however I don't want to use just anything on it as I guess if we had no boiler, we might need to use the fire and if we needed to sell the house in a hurry before removing the fire, I wouldn't want to leave something potentially dangerous.

I found some bbq paint today but they only had in in black or hammered metal, neither of which is going to work.

There is lots of youtube stuff about but that all seems to be on enclosed or electric fires rather than an open gas one.

Any ideas?

We don’t have mains gas out here but you can definitely buy heat proof paint for wood burning stoves.

I’ve only ever needed black but there must be other colours.

Thanks "Heat resistant paint"- exactly the term I was looking for! Doh!

I found a spray can one in aluminium - might be worth a try :)

I sprayed mine black from brass when we bought our house. Still looks good three years later.

Thanks, I thought about black but as we don't use the fire it's already a black yawning hole in the wall and that would just make it a bigger black hole. I've found somewhere that has a magnetic stainless steel trim that you just attach to the brass that might be an option if the measurements work out. It seems it's also not that expensive to replace the fret/grate thing at the front (about £30 for each option) still will be £60 on something we already hate though :(

I did similar but it's on parts not exposed to heat. I used a silver rub-on paste, can't remember the name but look on amazon etc.

Technically none of it is intended to be exposed to heat but I suppose it could get hot. We've only ever lit it once but it has a fan and is noisy so we've never bothered with it again. I'll have a look for the paste too, thanks.
