Just ate a macaroon for the first time

and was extremely disappointed. I paid £2.50 for a pack of 3. I've never tried them because of the price but always wanted to.

I was expecting a really crunchy bite but it was all soft and chewy. The flavours didn't tase very nice either.

Now I feel stupid for spending so much on something that I didn't even enjoy.

What have you eaten for the first time and been disappointed?

A good macaroon is a thing of beauty. There far too many bad versions out there though.

bluecard · 12/10/2019 14:21

What is the texture supposed to be like? I hope mine wasn't stale!

Has to be Ladurée for macarons, they are delicious.

Not for the first time but last night I ate mozzarella sticks and halfway through thought, they're really a bit meh and I don't enjoy them as much as I enjoy the thought of them if that makes sense? Deep-fried cheese - YES please, but mozzarella sticks are generally just a bit bland.

Soft and chewy is right. Good ones are wonderful.

Where was it from?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/10/2019 14:23

Supermarket version? Just coloured sugar with a sweet, mushy filling.

Hand made and called a macaron they are small tastes of sheer bliss. Sadly quite hard to find.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 12/10/2019 14:24

They must have a fine crusty shell on top, a good foot - that means a bit of height, and are chewy on the middle.

applepineapple · 12/10/2019 14:24

Macaron or macaroon?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/10/2019 14:25

Texture? A very thin crisp coaring with soft chewey meringue and a smooth French buttercream filling, both flavoured.

Smellbellina · 12/10/2019 14:25

I had a ‘dirty naan’ last night, it was a despicable creation, never again.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/10/2019 14:26

I thought that @applepineapple a macaroon is a chewy coconut thing, isn't it Smile

But I bake, so fear I may be a bit snobbish about the terminology!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/10/2019 14:26

@Smellbellina what in the name of all things foodie is that? Actually, no, I fear the answer

I don't mind a macaron if it's not too pricey. Believe it or not Iceland do a frozen pack which are ok for the price. (I've also had really expensive ones from posh shops too bit haven't been back).

Staying on the luxury theme hubby and I had a vodka and caviar evening once. 3 different grades of caviar ranging in price from 'ok' to 'expensive' to 'how much!' - we weren't really impressed by any of it. We both much prefer sashimi or sushi.

readingismycardio · 12/10/2019 14:29

I had macaroons from laduree and nothing ever came close to it. Those taste "fresh" if that makes sense and a bit creamy. Drooling

Macarons, Is what I meant.

cantfindname · 12/10/2019 14:55

I haven't had one in years as the last was so disappointing.

I keep saying I will make some and then lose my nerve!

Plump82 · 13/10/2019 15:51

I bet they were from Marks & Spencer's seeing as it was a pack of 3. They're rubbish and nothing like the real deal.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 13/10/2019 15:55

So I'm guessing were talking about macarons... Which should taste like almond meringues
