Would you eat this?

I left a bunch of shopping in my bag overnight (since about 5:30 yest). I thought it was just drinks and snacks I needed to take somewhere today. Just checking I had everything I found a packet of cheese (mild cheddar) I’d missed.

I’ve stuck it in the fridge but I’m not sure if I should eat it later or not?

Yeahhh I’d eat that no problem! 👌🏽

DoubleHelix79 · 12/10/2019 11:52

I've carried around blocks of cheese on multi-day hiking trips and they've been fine to eat. I definitely wouldn't throw it away.

FoldenHoard · 12/10/2019 12:00

Definitely I'd eat it.

elephantoverthehill · 12/10/2019 12:04

I wouldn't eat MILD cheddar Grin but it will be fine. Cheese is a preserved food.

Mrsjayy · 12/10/2019 12:09

Cheese lasts for a long time it will be fine to eat it is pasturised and preseved.

JemilyJ · 12/10/2019 12:16

I thought it would but of the two people around to ask one is always of the “cut off the mould and eat it” school of thought and the other is of the “any doubt, throw it out” persuasion. Needed a more reasoned opinion.

Thanks

Absolutely. Cheese doesn't really need to be stored in the fridge unless it os very warm.

Abraid2 · 12/10/2019 12:19

People have stored cheese without fridges for centuries.

Bellringer · 12/10/2019 12:59

Cheese can have the mold cut off and still eat it, even the mold won't hurt much. Jam also won't spoil but mold tastes disgusting. Humous and eggs, meat and fish esp chicken be more careful.
If you don't use cheese quick enough grateful and freeze

Chewbecca · 12/10/2019 13:02

It’s fine

PlasticPatty · 12/10/2019 13:02

Yes. When I was a child most homes didn't have a fridge (that seems laughable now - a neighbour sent to the US for her fridge freezer), and we ate cheese kept on the shelf.

SunshineAngel · 12/10/2019 13:04

I'm of the opinion that cheese is one of the foods (along with bread) that you can tell perfectly easy when it's not safe to eat due to mould, and even then lots of people just cut that bit off and carry on. So yes, even I would eat that, and I am very very picky (due to anxiety) with what I do and don't eat.

elephantoverthehill · 12/10/2019 13:08

Samuel Pepys dug a hole in his garden to store his wine and cheese during the Great Fire of London. He survived.

SpaceCadet4000 · 12/10/2019 13:19

Hard cheese will be absolutely fine. I'd have given it a bit more thought if it was cream cheese or something.

FaithInfinity · 12/10/2019 13:59

I’m really fussy and I’d still eat this!

speakout · 12/10/2019 14:07

I grew up in a home without a fridge- only rich people had them.

We kept cheese in a larder, covered. Lasted a week or until it was eaten.

I wouldn't eat mild cheddar though. Cheddar should be mouth puckeringly strong.

OMGshefoundmeout · 12/10/2019 14:12

Mild cheddar is not worth eating but it won’t hurt you.

Rivkka · 12/10/2019 14:15

We store cheese in the larder not the fridge so I would obviously eat it.

Mumofboth · 12/10/2019 14:21

I’d bin it. But I have a ridiculously sensitive stomach so I’m extra cautious. If something has been out of the fridge for longer than about an hour I’d worry.
I didn’t even consider that some people store cheese outside of a fridge so I guess that puts it into perspective. I’m sure it’s fine.

userxx · 12/10/2019 14:23

@Mumofboth Whattttttt? That's crazy.

Mumofboth · 12/10/2019 15:13

@userxx lol, I really don’t think it is.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/10/2019 15:16

How warm was the room it was in?

I’d probably grate it and use it in cooking.

You shouldn’t cut or scoop mould then eat the item.. mould spores grow into the food, you’re only cutting off the visible bit!

IncrediblySadToo · 12/10/2019 15:17

Keeping food in a cool
Larder is not the same as keeping it in anniver heated house

JemilyJ · 12/10/2019 15:19

I don’t have my heating on yet

Not eating food that’s been out for an house is bonkers! Do you never eat out? Or have BBQs or picnics?
