Six week old seems to be getting a cold.

I hope this is in the right place. We’ve just had our first baby six weeks ago and I’ve spent the last week away from but still in the same house obviously haha as our baby. I’ve been sleeping in a separate room as I’ve had a cold and didn’t want to pass it onto mam or baby.
We’ve noticed little Martha has started sneezing and the odd cough. Should we be worried and what any suggestions what we could give her if the cold develops? We thought best to ask parents initially rather than medical people. Thank you all in advance.

Don’t do anything. Babies need to start getting coughs and colds to build their immune system.

Good point. First time nervous parents. We’ll keep a beady eye on her.

Congratulations on your baby! You can raise the top of her cot with a couple of books under the legs and smear some vicks on a cloth and put near the cot (not on her clothes).

You can also buy a snot sucker or suck it out yourself if that doesn't revolt you!

You can get saline nasal drops suitable from birth which help with the stuffy nose. And a snot sucker is a godsend! There’s a filter so no worry about accidental inhaling snot.

She might find it hard to feed when stuffed up, so little and often usually helps. And yes to raising the end of the cot to aid with breathing.

Hahaha. The revolt bit got me. Thanks. The vapour rub is a good idea. 👍

Thank you good tip on the filter haha. We will check out the saline drops. She seems happy enough right now.

It is really horrid when they are so little as they can’t have a lot of the decongestants until 3m. My newborn came home from hospital with a cold poor love. At that age, we found it helpful to put her in a steamy m as much as possible and use the saline sprays and a good snot sucker. Once they get to 3m (I think) the calpol menthol plug in is brilliant.
