Glasses for toddler - any tips?

At DT2’s ophthalmologist appointment yesterday we got a prescription for glasses. He is a complex little guy - they can’t really assess his functional vision due to ASD and severe delays. He has a disorder of visual development and brain damage that could be causing cortical issues so figuring out what he can see is very difficult. He’s 3 but non verbal and can’t cooperate much with eye tests.

But now we have to get glasses and I just have no idea how to get him to wear them. The ophthalmologist said not to make it a battle, keep trying etc. Any tips?

Also does anyone know what’s actually covered on the nhs for kids? He filled in a form which I assume is the voucher but it’s in the car so I need to look at it.

Our DS also has ONH and nystagmus and I came back on to say "I bet he's got the Winnie the Pooh frames" by your description! As mentioned up thread, we bought some Zoobug frames as they were much nicer and paid for lenses to be put in at £35 but our DS absolutely loved his WtP frames so the Zoobug ones are his spare!

We were unsure if the glasses would work like you but actually he asks for them now if he doesn't have them and says they really help. He wasn't fully corrected because of the nystagmus but now he's nearly fully corrected and is +7. We had a few times where he would take them off but thankfully it was relatively easy once he realised his vision is better with them on. Hopefully it'll be the same for your little one. Good luck OP.

He was in the WtP frames for a year by the way. Now he's got some lovely Crayola and Minion ones Smile

Oh I’m glad he liked them. I’m worried how his skin will cope, when I started wearing glasses full time I got really sore on my nose and tops of my ears. Hopefully he will be okay.

My son had glasses as a baby , ( she has sn) ... her miraflex as they are comfy and just out them back in every time he takes them off .. don't mention them just keep going quietly replacing them .. he will no doubt realise that they help him and will keep them on.. good luck .

Not sure if anyone will see this question so might have to start a new thread, but was wondering if anyone experienced strange behaviour when their toddler started wearing glasses?

DT2 is tolerating them better than we thought. He’s leaving them on while we read books and we had about half an hour yesterday where he wore them without taking them off while running about.

But whenever he wears them he seems sort of subdued, maybe a bit sad? And he keeps yawning like they’re making him really tired. I don’t really understand because they’re not an especially strong prescription (apparently his actual prescription is +3.5 or +3.75 but they’ve started him with +1.75) and with all his other vision issues it’s hard to know if this would make any difference. He does seem to be looking at things differently but might be my imagination.

Is this just a normal response?

Can't say our DS yawned or seems subdued but it's a big change for them so he could just be adjusting and it's making him tired. If it's still continuing after a week or so perhaps go back to the opticians to ask their advice (or the hospital).
