I’ve agreed to having a Smart Meter fitted, good idea or not?

So have given in to EDf. It’s a generation 2 one which the bloke swears has no problems and also you can still change company.

He says it’s one for the electricity and one for the gas. Dh has pointed out both meters will use electricity so our usage will go up. Surely not by much though?

Only benefit I can see is not having to send readings in. Have people found they’ve changed lowered electricity use since having one?

Can you cancel?
Your meter will be a dumb meter if you choose to switch supplier as it won't work!

Ignore me. I didn't read that you had put it's a gen 2 one Blush

Have you looked up one of the many other threads on smart meters? Not being funny , just making a suggestion. There was a fairly long one just recently.

PrettyShiningPeople · 11/10/2019 18:32

Yes, the only benefit to you is the one you mention. No others whatsoever.

Yes, I did search for previous threads. Problem with the search function on here is the date order seems fairly random. Then I did think I could search again with a date restriction but even the more recent ones I found didn’t state if they were generation 1 or 2 meters so wasn’t sure how helpful that would be anyway.

One recent thread I found, someone had a large bill but then some people were saying it sounded a reasonable cost for the size of house and others suggesting a meter problem but no conclusion so no idea if there was a meter problem.

It's hand in hand with no having to give meter readings but having the billing be more accurate is just less administrative hassle. Our electricity bills used to be all over the place and their models never quite predicted our consumption right.

I found it useful getting a sense of what was consuming lots of energy and that helped reduce our consumption. DH and I were alarmed when we saw the impact of the kettle and oven on our energy monitor screen and so we wised up and used them more efficiently. Also the impact of lights left on, devices left charging etc.
