WWYD WFH Vs Pay Rise

Rainbowhairdontcare · 11/10/2019 18:22

My employer has agreed to let me WFH for my last 3 months of ML and I can do as many hours as I like. My role is project based, so childcare is not an issue.

My role will be completely different when I get back, so I'm torn between asking for a substantial pay rise or asking to WFH 2 days. Of course I could ask for both, but it might come down to one or the other.

Just to clarify, you aren't thinking you can wfh with your baby there, going forward are you ?

If you can do your job as well at home as you do in the office ask for both. It’s 2019. There’s no reason to traipse into the office every single day wasting time and money if you don’t need to. A balance like you’re suggesting is good, so that you can still see the team.

My role is project based, so childcare is not an issue.

Can you clarify what you mean by this? It sounds as though you plan to look after your child while working. If this is the case, then aside from not being allowed, you will struggle to get anywhere near enough work done or to look after your child well.

I say this as someone who is self employed and whose work is project based.

I WFH for many many are with a massive .com while still looking after my DD. This is not something I'd do exactly the same way, but what we plan is that I get as much done during naptime, but the bulk of it would be done when DH is home. I reckon can easily do 2-3 hours worth of work until he gets home, and then do the bulk of it later.

My job is mainly translating a website and business growth in LatAm (for said website). The working hours over there start around 3pm over here anyways, so it's not an issue to work late.

I don't think I'd do it FT anyways, so probably 20hrs spread throughout the week, so completely doable!

Also, my current salary is peanuts considering my responsibilities (close to MW) so I know they have to give me a payrise regardless but I'm happy to negotiate a compromise.

Your working location isn’t part of your remuneration- the two things are entirely different. Pay could be negotiated in combination with extra holiday/pension/healthcare/gym membership or whatever. But you don’t barter salary with your working location!

My boss is VERY cheap... But he's getting a lot of freebies with me (including a trip to the region so I can meet with possible business leads).

I know it's usually it's not part of the negotiations but nobody gets any extra perks apart from pay, nobody is on bonuses for example.

Jumping from 18k to 27k seems like a massive jump, even if a similar role is between 40-50k.

What flowery said. I was above to write the same.

Teddybear45 · 12/10/2019 08:19

18k for a project based translation role in latin america suggests you are a junior project manager / officer. So by that logic you should request a promotion. Jump to 27k, stick it out for a bit, then work for a company like HSBC or Santander where you will be paid 40k for the same job.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 12/10/2019 08:26

I actually used to be a BPO manager for a big .com My salary was £50k and that was with a pay cut when I asked to work remotely so I could take my job to Cornwall where my exH new woke was. I was made redundant va few years later.

There are no similar jobs in Cornwall (where I live) so I have to make the best of what it's available to me. It's lucky that I found a job on the same field but different industry.
