Am I doing reusable cups wrong?

I have a Contigo mug (as recommended on Mumsnet) and I am really happy to take that to coffee shops and use it to save a disposable cup going to landfill but the tea in it stays hot for hours and hours so I can't drink it when I buy it. The other day I bought a cup of tea on a trip and couldn't drink it until 5 hours later when I got home.

What do others do please? Do I need a non insulated travel mug as well?

Thank you.

I agree, the contigo keeps it too hot. I have a bamboo one I got from home bargains that isn't insulated for when I want to drink my coffee straight away.

Ooh I love my tea piping hot so love these type of cups.

You have to make the tea, then leave the lid off until it’s drinkable. Not so good for takeaways.

So keep the lid off until it's cooler. I was doing it wrong then! I love the Contigo, it's great around my child but I need my tea too.

I have this cup and this issue, either ask staff to put a dash of cold water in while they are making it or leave the lid off if you can.

enjoyingscience · 12/10/2019 15:21

I found this with the contigo. I now make it in a china cup, leave it for a minute and pour it in before I leave the house. One more cup for the dishwasher but at least I can drink it!

I use the waitrose reusable cups a lot. A bit insulated but not that much and the hole at the top helps it cool. Obviously since it has a gap in the lid you have to carry it upright. Great in the car on journeys in the cup holder.

I'm desperately searching for a reusable mug that keeps drinks hot, can somebody link to this one please?

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 12/10/2019 15:29

I have a Contigo mug but I mostly use it when I want to keep something hot for hours eg on long journeys or if I want to bring my own coffee into work.

I also carry a keep cup, which is what I use if I want a coffee on the go.

I have got the Contigo snapseal now but did have the Contigo west loop and preferred that until it was stolen at work.

I use a £1 Starbucks reusable cup exactly for this reason. I do t like my drinks burning hot. Dh has piping hot drinks so uses contigo or a keep cup

JanetandJohn500 · 13/10/2019 11:42

I have several. The tall metal Costa one is fab. It doesn't leak and keeps tea hot for 1 hour. The shorter metal Costa one keeps track hot for 3 hours (and also doesn't leak!) and then I have a Contigo one which keeps tea hot overnight- perfect if you don't want a teasmaid but don't want to get out of bed 😂

AudacityOfHope · 13/10/2019 11:46

This is why I ask for a black coffee with a shot of cold water in it. Otherwise it's hours until it doesn't take the skin off my lips.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 13/10/2019 11:46

Don’t know what’s wrong with my Contigo mug, only keeps coffee warm for an hour.

Contigo mug, only keeps coffee warm for an hour.

@Bananasandchocolatecustard It might be worth having a very careful look at the spring mechanism. When mine started cooling down very quickly, I eventually found a sliver of lemon pip in the mechanism which was easy to miss. It which stopped it closing completely. Quick rinse and it was back to perfect again. Good luck.
