Do I need get this checked out? Sliced my thumb

Sliced my thumb last night. It bled quite a bit but I just shoved a plaster on it and didn't think much about it.

Just had to soak the plaster off and realised the slice is quite a bit deeper than I thought. It doesn't hurt unless I press directly on it. It doesn't gape unless I'm flexing my thumb and it's not bleeding.

There should be pics attached.

No flaming please, I have health anxiety and it's making me doubt my judgement!

Steri strips and then a covering over the top x

QuestionableMouse · 11/10/2019 13:19

No steri strips but it's been re plastered.

Thanks!

I’d just plaster it. It’ll heal quickly.

Get some steristrips if it makes it more comfortable, but it won't knit now - the skin edges are already dying back. They wouldn't stitch it either for that reason.

bloodywhitecat · 11/10/2019 13:23

I wouldn't seek advice for that, there isn't much they could do for it. I would just keep it as dry as possible and it should heal quite quickly.

QuestionableMouse · 11/10/2019 13:29

Thanks!

That was the plan before the anxiety kicked in. Bloody annoying though because it's making driving a bit of a pain. I'd be OK if I didn't need to use the hand brake!

You could always do what I saw a woman in France do as we waited in line for a car ferry, she simply used the bumper of the car in front to hold her in place on the slipway...

simonisnotme · 11/10/2019 14:28

with that kind of cut it needs steri strips to join the edges together as soon as you can stop the bleeding you could try them now but you may have to wait till it heals over, and keep it as dry as you can
i dont use plasters much as it just keeps things moist cuts need to be kept dry

minniemoll · 11/10/2019 14:34

I had a similar cut, I went to minor injuries who put steristrips on it and told me to keep it dry. I redid the dressing after a few days, and it healed beautifully, there's not even a scar now.

Bobbindobbin · 11/10/2019 14:37

Should be fine, give it a soak in detol to stop it going septic. I’m always doing it with my sharp knife

AlwaysOverworkedUnderpaid · 11/10/2019 16:39

Jesus Christ. Do not soak it in Dettol!!!!

BlueScreen171 · 11/10/2019 17:45

give it a soak in detol to stop it going septic

What?! Shock

Bobbindobbin · 11/10/2019 17:47

I’ll stand corrected! I always soak all wounds in very diluted dettol and then dress them. Get it from my mother.

alexdgr8 · 11/10/2019 18:54

depending on where/how it happened, maybe need a tetanus jab as a precaution.
also i'd be wary of the risk of infection; is there a minor injuries walk-in centre you could go to.
and keep a close eye on it for any hotness, redness esp spreading, and feeling unwell or flu-like symptoms.
cuts should be scrubbed clean but that's difficult with a painful cut on end of your finger, may do further damage, open the wound; so that's why I'd go to walk=in.
I've seen how minor nicks/ slight rash can turn into galloping systemic infection, can be v dangerous.
I know it's rare, but not that rare, and time can be of the essence.
so I would not take a chance. by the way I used to be much more blasé before recent experience with a neighbour, seeing what happened to her.
good luck.

bloodywhitecat · 11/10/2019 18:55

My mum used to do the same the old brown antiseptic dettol, not the modern sprays/liquids, it's what it's designed for isn't it? She used to use it on my eczema too, but neat to "dry it out". Used to hurt like hell Grin.

gubbsywubbsy · 11/10/2019 19:01

Nah .. just a flesh wound innnit 🤷‍♀️....

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 11/10/2019 19:05

If you have a walk in centre pop down and get it dressed. I had similar and the nurse practioner glued the edges together.

Or get some streristrips.

BatshitBertha · 11/10/2019 19:20

I'd clean with some salt water and put a plaster on it. Really, don't waste your time or anyone else's by going to a drop in centre or getting a tetanus jab. It'll heal very quickly.

QuestionableMouse · 11/10/2019 19:30

It's been Savloned and plastered. Feels fine, I was just anxious because it was a bit deeper than I initially thought.

The brown dettol used to sting like a bastard!

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 11/10/2019 20:22

I went to a and e with a deeper cut and was told it would just knit back together with some steristrips/plaster.

Well how was I to know? Thought my thumb was going to fall off! Hope it gets better soon :)
