Teacher - How old is a NQT?

If you go through teacher training and have your first proper class, what is the youngest you could possibly be?

21 would be the youngest - you'd have had to enter university at 18 and graduated from a 3 year primary education course - that would be the quickest way.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 11/10/2019 11:05

Yes, 21 would be the youngest.

Why are you asking?

  1. Why?
fedup21 · 11/10/2019 11:09

21, though I was 22 as I did a degree and then a post grad.

Why do you ask?

YobaOljazUwaque · 11/10/2019 11:33

They all look about 14

Fuckenstein · 11/10/2019 11:42

Ds has a new teacher who is very dishy but looks rather young! Just checking if I need to feel guilty about appreciating his excellent genes.

Haha brilliant OP. Wasn't expecting that as the catalyst for the question Grin

YobaOljazUwaque · 11/10/2019 11:58

cradlesnatcher. Yes you should feel guilty, he is only a child.

SamBeckettslastleap · 11/10/2019 11:59

He is definitely old enough to dream about but equally far too young to date!

fedup21 · 11/10/2019 12:00

Would it make a difference if he was 21 or 23?!

LetItGoToRuin · 11/10/2019 12:13

fedup21 it would make a difference if OP had her reception-aged DC when she was 16.

Fuckenstein · 11/10/2019 12:27

I wouldn't date him, is it even allowed to date your childs teacher? Grin and I am 30 so still a potential cradle snatcher but no harm in having a look!

fedup21 · 11/10/2019 12:53

fedup21 it would make a difference if OP had her reception-aged DC when she was 16.

Not really. If she was 20, she could go out with a 21 year old or a 23 year old.

TenPenceMix · 11/10/2019 12:59

Ha ha ha this was not the thread I imagined it was going to be! Smile

BeagleMomma · 11/10/2019 13:06

Here I was geared up to defend 21 year old NQT me and how it didn't make me a crap teacher just because I was young 😂 How refreshing that it wasn't about bashing young teachers!

inwood · 11/10/2019 13:25

And that is why men don't go in to primary teaching! Or at least part of the reason.

Said in jest (mostly!)

Fuckenstein · 11/10/2019 13:39

Don't get me wrong I am not booking in extra parents evening sessions or anything but he has a very smiley wholesome face and is easy to look at.

I wouldn't bash a young NQT - my daughter had one and it really turned her attitude to teaching around. She was the best teacher I have come across! Full of enthusiasm, really connected with the kids.

dreichsky · 11/10/2019 14:43

I think young teachers can often be the best, we've had some lovely ones, full of enthusiasm and compassion. ( before the system knocks it out of them)

Tableclothing · 11/10/2019 14:45

Half your age plus seven...

Fuckenstein · 11/10/2019 14:48

Ah that rules him out unless he took a gap year 😂
