Watching 16 and pregnant (guilty pleasure Grin) and I notice they always have a very big bottle of water they keep in the fridge.

On today’s episode, it even had a picture of a baby on it.

Is there a specific water you can buy from your shop that you use for formula? And if so why?

Why can’t you use fresh boiled water like the UK?

It's demineralised water. They also don't seem to heat the water to make the bottles up.

I thought it was distilled water? But yes there are specific waters marketed for babies (that are more expensive and not really any different to your typical gallon of distilled water). And yes it is common to make bottles using cool water- that’s what is typically on the box instructions anyway. Personally I mostly used ready made as you can get it in big 32oz bottles here.

Yeah, the water's not great in some parts of the country, so it makes sense you'd use distilled water. We make up the bottles at room temperature, or use a warmer if the milk/formula's been sitting in the fridge.

HJWT · 11/10/2019 14:35

@allfurcoatnoknickers is the formula different there then? Because here we have to use boiling water to kill the bacteria! X

Can i ask why loo doors in US have gaps. Very disconcerting Smile
Sorry for derailing the thread OP.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 11/10/2019 14:44

@HJWT We boil the water first, and keep it in a sterilized bottle on the counter, then make up the formula at room temp IYSWIM.

@beanaseireann No idea, but I don't like it either. Grin

No the formula isn’t sterile unless you buy the concentrated liquid over the powder (lots more options here and you can use coupons, yay!). Paediatricians and formula companies here apparently don’t agree that powder poses any significant risk and that boiling water is need (you would boil tap water for young babies if not using bottled as the water supply can be iffy but that’s to kill bugs in the water, not to add hot water to bottles).

I heard that the loo thing is because those stalls are super cheap- they’ll fit any size of room regardless of odd dimensions, wonky walls, or ceiling height and are quick to install. Like the Ikea flat pack of bathrooms. But when installed, often badly, they can leave pretty big gaps. It’s definitely in my top 5 least favourite things about this country.

They're easier to remodel when needed. And because American women don't tend to feel the need to peer through the gaps at people. I find toilets in the UK very claustrophobic because they don't have the gaps.

Thanks everyone Grin
