How do I get rid of books?

My dc are having a clear-out, and we've got a load of old annuals (Lego, Dennis the Menace, Horrible Histories, Guinness WR etc) that nobody wants. They're from 2006-2014. Charity shops won't take them, nor car-booters, nor the school.

Suggestions?

Big bonfire on 5th November?

Paper aeroplane party?

Start your own papier-mâché MLM business?

BykerBykerOoh · 10/10/2019 16:07

Ooh, put them in a big waterproof chest with “Do Not Open Until 2119” written on it and bury them in the gArden.

justthecat · 10/10/2019 16:08

I put mine in the charity bags that come through the door

I always see annuals at car boots? It’s s collectors paradise!

Try looking to sell on line?

BykerBykerOoh · 10/10/2019 16:09

Offer them for free on Freecycle.
Shred them and use them as hamster bedding.
Use them as a footstool.

I don’t think you’re even trying.

Children's wards?

Winterfellismyhome · 10/10/2019 16:10

Does your local train/tube station have a community book shelf?

NerrSnerr · 10/10/2019 16:10

Are there other charity shops that will take them? Our local ones take children's books and they sell really well (it's where I buy all my children's books).

willloman · 10/10/2019 16:10

Auction them for a fortune!
Pls don't burn books. Maybe freecycle? School Christmas fair?

NerrSnerr · 10/10/2019 16:11

Sorry I misread, it's particularly the annuals. Check on eBay to see how the particular ones you have a selling, some may be collected?

VaguelySensible · 10/10/2019 16:12

I don't actually want to destroy them! (Though if all else fails I'll put them in the paper recycling.)

Freecycle's a good idea.

They've been rejected by the six I've visited.

Doctors surgery, library, church hall

AutumnCrow · 10/10/2019 16:17

Sad that the first response on here is to burn them.

Please offer them online to someone who wants them. I buy lots of books at charity shops, btw, and give lots to charity shops. The hospice shop always accepts them.

chillychicken · 10/10/2019 16:28

You often find book banks at “recycling centres” (aka the tip). Fairly sure they’re all BHF around here.

NewName54321 · 10/10/2019 17:30

Put some away. My Nan gave me some of my mum's books when I was about 8. Best thing ever (especially the ones Mum had written little notes in). Even if you don't ever have a future grandchild who wants them, there will still be people collecting classic annuals who will buy them.

If you want rid, then would your doctor/ dentist/ hospital take them for their waiting room? Otherwise, add some to a community bookshop or leave one or two where they will be found with a note to the finder to enjoy and pass on.

If in not-so-good condition, use the pages for crafts or as gift wrap?

Orangeblossom78 · 10/10/2019 18:11

I used to see used books on Amazon, it is really easy. Why not take a look on there and see if they are selling, they might be if old / collectable. You could sell them on there. There is a guide to condition on there

TheOliphantintheRoom · 10/10/2019 18:17

They will end up in the recycling bin or landfill one day so you might as well say yourself the hassle and put them there now.

kenandbarbie · 10/10/2019 18:20

My kids would love them! Where do you live?

mamapants · 10/10/2019 18:21

Lots of these options are just passing on the problem though. No one will take old annuals from communal book shelves and someone else will have to throw them out.
I'd offer them for free on Facebook and if no takers recycle.
I hate doing things like this myself feels so wasteful. They really are a wasteful product

PralineCookie · 10/10/2019 18:25

I'd take old annuals. I see people buying them from a local charity shops so clearly some people buy them.

Plumpciousness · 10/10/2019 18:26

Nowadays most 'standard' charity shops are very selective about accepting books but some charities have dedicated shops just for secondhand books (eg Oxfam and Barnardo's). Maybe see if there are any of those in your area?

greyspottedgoose · 10/10/2019 18:27

If your local tesco have a community book table they will take them, mine is always desperate for more
