mouth ulcers from new brace advise

madeyemoodysmum · 09/10/2019 18:26

I know you will be able to advise me.
Dd has her brace fitted on Monday and is now in a lot of pain with sora areas and ulcers.

Is it worth a doctor trip. Is there anything on prescription that’s better than bonjela. Gingel

I’m giving her painkillers as well.

Thank in advance

Dental wax can be put over bits of the brace that are rubbing

madeyemoodysmum · 09/10/2019 18:31

Thanks. She has been using the wax but it’s not helped.

Difflam mouthwash or spray is better than bonjela. Or anbesol gel

Did they not give her any wax to put over the braces?

There's no point going to GP with it

Definitely don’t take her to the doctor. It will get better as time passes. Warm salt water mouthwashes can help healing and good oral hygiene. If you are very concerned see her dentist.

madeyemoodysmum · 09/10/2019 18:34

I might have some difflam or I’ll get some tomorrow.

If the dental wax is not helping, go back to the orthodontist. Sometimes the braces just need a tiny modification.

captainprincess · 09/10/2019 18:35

I had a brace for 18 months that got tightened every 6 weeks. It was always painful for 3-4 days and I would get ulcers. To be honest I just got used to it.
I found the wax useless but bonjela helped a bit.

ThatsLongFam · 09/10/2019 18:38

I had braces as an adult and suffered with incredibly sore blisters for the first few weeks of wear. They did heal eventually, but while they were very sore I did get some relief from using Iglu mouth ulcer gel. It creates a sort of cover or shield over the ulcer which stops the site rubbing against the brace. It was an absolute lifesaver!

Ticklemeelmo · 09/10/2019 18:39

Doctor won't do anything, just use more of the wax.

This is not an NHS approved method I found it on the internet, but...

Take a match- cold is fine- and hold the tip of it on the white bit. With about 30 or 60 seconds the white gunk will start to disintegrate and turn black and kind of disappear. It stings whilst doing it but numbs it up nicely.
Something to do with cauterising as I understand it.

Anyway I have a big annoying one at the mo and do the match thing several times a day.

I have just had a lingual brace removed and had quite a few sore spots in my mouth during the time I had it on. I found gishygoo to be the best thing. It’s a silicone stuff that you put over the scratchy bit and stays put until you pull it off. Far better than wax which I found to be useless. I bought it online from DB orthodontics. Not cheap though.

Leah2005 · 09/10/2019 19:20

Take her back and get it checked. My ds had one fitted and the orthodontist had forgotten to clip one of the wires at the back. It was directly sticking into his cheek and ripping him to shreds. He was so stoic and I felt awful.

JeffreyJefferson · 09/10/2019 19:21

@which1 I didn’t read your post properly and thought you meant a lit one i was like ShockConfusedHmm 😂😂😂

which1 · 09/10/2019 19:25

Jeffrey

Hmm, no :-)

But I have done it hot as well. As in, light it, let it burn for a couple of seconds, blow it out, then apply it.

Doesn't seem to make it more effective so just do it cold.

kittycat01 · 09/10/2019 19:42

It should only ache for a few days and shouldn't be painful. Are there wires digging in causing the ulcers? I have a brace and it's only really badly hurt once and that was because the orthodontist hadn't bent the wires round properly so they were cutting into my mouth. I went back and got them bent and it was fine after that. Wax is a pain to use because you have to remember to take it out when you eat (otherwise you're likely to swallow it). Good luck!

Bluewavescrashing · 09/10/2019 19:46

This sounds brutal but her inner cheeks will toughen up over time. I've just finished 2 years of adult braces and developed mouth ulcer type sores where the attachments were, they rubbed on my inner cheeks. But after a few days I didn't even notice any more. In fact when I finished the braces I was shocked to see the state of my inner cheeks in the mirror as I didn't feel any discomfort. I'm getting back to normal now.

In the meantime, soft food, mouthwash, ibuprofen, difflam spray.

DCIRozHuntley · 09/10/2019 19:51

Anbesol liquid s AMAZING and helped me through this. Salt water to rinse my mouth out too. It lasted about 2 weeks for me. Probably my best advice is to cut her A LOT of slack. I was foul to everyone around me, physically couldn't smile and talking hurt. Leave her be if she doesn't want to eat, drink or socialise. The pain is something else. But, it does pass. Flowers for your DD.

DCIRozHuntley · 09/10/2019 19:54

Ooh hadn't thought about a wire as mine was inside of my top lip - the smooth bit of brace on the front of my teeth did it as my lips learnt to sit around it if that makes sense. I was told it was normal and it did stop, as I say, in a fortnight.

PoweringUp · 09/10/2019 20:15

I have braces at the moment, I had weeks of pain with excess of 20 ulcers in my mouth. Igloo is AMAZING stuff, better than anything else I tried and brings immediate relief!

madeyemoodysmum · 09/10/2019 22:21

Thanks all nipped out and got iglo and difflam sprays.

Hoping that will help. Will tell her about the match thing too!! Smile

I had sugar free chewing gum bunged on mine when the pain got too much.
The stupid ortho didn’t tell me about or provide wax. I had no clue. Cheeks were scarred inside for a decade.
