Ds9 is autistic and highly intelligent, very advanced reader. Up to now, he's been a prolific reader. He's just finished the Harry Potter series (and loved it) but now, nothing compares and he isn't interested in reading 😢

He's also really liked: diary of a wimpy kid, Percy Jackson, how to train your dragon, treehouse series

Any ideas - he just won't engage in anything because nothing is as good as HP 🤦🏼‍♀️

His Dark Materials is a thousand times better than that rip off of the Worst Witch.

Stevienickssleeves · 08/10/2019 20:32

Hunger games? My dd devoured them. Terry pratchett ...wee free men, hat full of sky. We are now onto the grown up pratchett books.

PopcornAndWine · 08/10/2019 20:36

Jonathan Stroud Lockwood& Co series - first one is The Screaming Staircase. Also Bartimeaus trilogy by the same author. Anything by Diana Wynne Jones. Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix - first book is Sabriel.

How about Wonder & its spin-offs? I read that with my Y5/Y6 (9-11 year olds) Book Club & we all loved it.

Michael Morpurgo books?

Classics such as Treasure Island, Black Beauty, Narnia, Anne of Green Gables etc?

Also, I'm just about to try a favourite from my childhood with my Book Club - The Demon Headmaster (many in the series if he likes it).

Best of all, take him to a library & let him browse & chat to the librarians.

RainOrSun · 08/10/2019 20:42

Wings of Fire series by Tui Sutherland.

teatimedreamer · 08/10/2019 20:42

He's refusing to go to the library to browse as he says he only wants books he can keep - the autistic mind at its best!

Had forgotten about terry Pratchett actually. Is hunger games as savage and gory as the films?

I second Wings of fire. DS loved them. Also the Percy Jackson series were a hit. I went into Waterstones today and got some really detailed recommendations from them. I got the 3rd in the Wizard of once series (he loved the first two), The list magician by Piers Torday and A pinch of magic by Michelle Harrison. They all came highly recommended.

cheeseismydownfall · 08/10/2019 20:52

Artimus Fowl? Book People have the whole set available at a big discount.

DeanImpala67 · 08/10/2019 20:55

Artemis Fowl series or the Eragon series are both great and both are faves of my DD who loved Harry Potter. Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, or Good Omens maybe?

postitnot · 08/10/2019 21:25

I'd second Diana Wynne Jones - the Chrestomanci books are far better than HP. Start with 'the lives of Christopher chant' ....

spiderlight · 08/10/2019 21:30

The Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo - similar-ish vein to Harry Potter but a bit more down-to-earth. Her Snow Spider trilogy is fabulous as well.

oobedobe · 08/10/2019 22:12

My DD (11) loves adventure/fantasy books though funnily she was never that keen on HP), she has loved:
Keeper of the Lost Cities Series
Percy Jackson Series
Lost Hero Series
Five Kingdoms Series
Fablehaven Series
Land of Stories

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 08/10/2019 22:15

The Narnia series
Lord of the rings
His dark materials

quitecontrary123 · 08/10/2019 22:17

Philip Pullman
Terry Pratchett (although quite a lot of swearing in the one DS recently read)

LoveGrowsWhere · 08/10/2019 22:30

Young Samurai
Skullduggery Pleasant series
HIVE
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe

DS only read one Terry Pratchet & not his cup of tea.

theboywonteat · 08/10/2019 23:43

Tried Philip Pullman Northern Lights book with my 9 year old - but he really struggled to understand some of the language so we’ve put that one aside for now until he’s a bit older.

He likes
Wizards of Once
Magnus Chase series by Rick Riordan
Horrible Histories
David Williams books

NoSquirrels · 08/10/2019 23:46

My DC (10) has the exact same reading list taste and Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landry is THE thing.

(So much so not wanting to read anything else...)

happymrsc · 08/10/2019 23:54

Artemis Fowle? There's a whole series I believe

enjoyingscience · 09/10/2019 00:04

My 10yo loves the Alex Rider series.

He’s just finished the first two wizards of once books by Cressida Cowell and thought they were brilliant too. Might be a good choice if your DS likes magic!

damnitdamnit · 09/10/2019 00:28

Danny Wallace - hamish and the world stoppers. I think there are 3/4 books and my daughter said they were great.

teatimedreamer · 09/10/2019 06:38

Thanks all - some great suggestions here which I'm going to go and look up!

Agree with lots of these but Nevermoor is outstanding, and a series in the making.

buckeejit · 09/10/2019 09:09

ds9 loved HP too but read them very early on and is now having a renewed interest! He has liked the hobbit, percy jackson & heroes of olympus, 13 storey tree house, holes, wonder. Michael Morpugo is good too.

He will be 10 next month & I'm struggling to find suitable stuff. I don't mind a little bit of swearing but not sure about sexual references as he is quite naive yet. He loves a series though so eager to get some of these on his bday/Christmas list
