What should I spend my John Lewis voucher on?

Got £140 in JL vouchers for my birthday, which was in May and I still can't decide.

I can afford to top them up a bit. Had a mooch round last week and everything I wanted was £££ . I'm rubbish at spending money on myself.

I am still tempted by the kitchenaid, £500 though, and really it's the look of it I'm more attracted to. It's a lot of money to spend on cakes.

I need the coverless duvet buy if I had 140 to spend I would get a good quality handbag.

ToLiveInPeace · 08/10/2019 22:51

I once dithered for two years with JL vouchers. In the end, I bought a Lumie sunrise alarm clock and loved it. About £80 a few years ago.

HerkyBaby · 08/10/2019 22:55

A new duvet so you get the benefit everyday/night or Christmas decorations that you can enjoy for many years to come

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 08/10/2019 22:56

I would never buy another cake mixer. But my magimix food processor would be replaced if it ever eventually claps out.

MsChatterbox · 08/10/2019 22:59

I would buy a handbag.

wonderstuff · 08/10/2019 23:02

My current handbag is a primark canvas rucksack. I love it.

A kitchenaid is a bit of an overstretch compared to the vouchers (the basic version can be bought more cheaply elsewhere, btw) but it's the perfect amount of money for a proper (not newfangled) clockwork dualit toaster. Those ones last forever and all the bits can be replaced if they break, so less landfill, long term.

I think the retail landscape will have changed irreversibly if JL go bust, mind. (Though I'm buggered if I'm going to take pity on them and accept the quote for LVT flooring installation we got today. Yowsers!)

doodlejump1980 · 08/10/2019 23:05

Oh some fancy le creuset

PickAChew · 08/10/2019 23:05

Their wool duvets are absolutely lovely. I'll agree with that.

Bloodybridget · 08/10/2019 23:10

If I had that to spend I would add a tenner and buy Seasalt's Janelle coat, probably in Dark Wreckage. There you go!

Tbh I wasn’t really thinking of a full size stand mixer - more relishing your opportunity to replace a kettle, hand blender, or some other thing closer to the amount of your voucher.

A kindle sounds like a sensible purchase. (Much better than spending hours every day reading everything on a phone screen. Blush )

AwkwardSquad · 09/10/2019 05:47

I don’t wear much makeup either, OP, but I do like perfume and JL generally has a good selection. Or perhaps new boots. And a broccoli bauble.

msmith501 · 09/10/2019 06:12

I'd second the Kindle. I still have my original one with the built in keyboard which must make it about 11 years old. Superb idea!

littlecabbage · 09/10/2019 06:15

Book a personal stylist appointment, then spend the money on clothes. I did it a few weeks ago and now have a wardrobe of stylish pieces that all co-ordinate Grin

FeltCarrot · 09/10/2019 06:23

If you like your rucksack OP why not trade up for a leather one? I’ve just ordered a Radley rucksack in the sale for £119. Leaves £20 to buy a new Emma Bridgewater mug! 😀

Ratonastick · 09/10/2019 09:32

I had a load of JL vouchers a few years ago and bought really fancy versions of kitchen stuff that I already needed. Eg I needed mixing bowls so I bought the Nigella nest of 4 pouring bowls, a le creuset griddle pan instead of a normal one, a set of cake forks that matched my main cutlery, etc. It was 15 years ago, I still have all these things (well only 3 of the bowls following an unfortunate incident) and they still make me happy so money well spent.

MrBobLobLaw · 09/10/2019 09:55

I had the same (lovely) problem last year OP. In the end I bought a Sonos One. It's a speaker that links to your phone so you can listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks/whatever. It's really good sound quality and I use it every day!

They probably have a newer version now too.

LonginesPrime · 09/10/2019 10:02

How about a nice weekend bag?

Definitely go for a Kitchenaid but there are online deals that are much cheaper than £500! They're doing a free glass bowl offer at the moment too, so perfect timing!

Rachelover60 · 09/10/2019 10:04

Christmas presents, food (from Waitrose),something you fancy. Or give the voucher to someone for a Christmas present, I've done that with Boots.

Also gave an M&S voucher which they sent me for something I was unable to pickup due toi illness, gave to someone as gift. They were delighted.

Vouchers are great (not as good as cash).

Nice to have a voucher.

PrestonNotHeston · 09/10/2019 10:29

A mattress topper, just in time for nest-building season. Or a wool duvet - I tried one on after reading it was great for allergy sufferers and perimenopausal women and now I'm slowly changing every bed in the house over to wool, sale by sale...

wonderstuff · 09/10/2019 17:26

RonniePasas thank you that's a relief.

Lots of lovely ideas thank you. Didn't want to just have stuff you know and I don't really need much at the moment.. its between kindle and a new outfit, my jeans are a bit sad, but shopping for jeans is quite a challenge..

I'd probably also 'swap spend'. You can also spend them in Waitrose, so you can just buy groceries with them and spend the £140 wherever you like

Agree with Barbara
