I don’t want to be THAT parent

But... today our boys’ nursery set up a WhatsApp group with all the parents. All phone numbers and names visible. This is a massive GDPR no-no right? I teach some of the nursery kids’ older siblings at the neighbouring primary school. Sigh.

Huge no-no.

I'd raise it without even giving a thought to being 'that' parent.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 08/10/2019 19:10

They must have asked for consent off the parents surely?
I would never agree to this.

8by8 · 08/10/2019 19:10

Are you sure you didn’t sign up to it somehow? I noticed a yoga class I looked at wanted to share everybody’s details and it was included in the terms when you signed up to them unless you specifically said no.

So maybe ask them about it rather than going all guns blazing.

Part of GDPR is giving explicit consent. Hiding privacy notices in the terms and conditions doesn't cut it anymore.

doodlejump1980 · 08/10/2019 19:13

Definitely haven’t signed up to anything. This is the first time they’ve done it. They have a nursery app that they could’ve used to get the info to parents.

Any parent who raises valid concerns or complaints in the appropriate way would never be "that parent"

"That parent" = rude, aggressive, confrontational, goes storming in with half the facts, no open mind, determined to put people in their place. Etc.

30somethingandtired · 08/10/2019 19:30

That's awful! Never mind GDPR, it is totally unprofessional, and totally inappropriate.

You're totally reasonable to complain about that.

Carparkticket · 08/10/2019 20:22

What? Definitely not ok. Many people don’t want to share their details for important reasons.
What were they thinking?!!!

Geneva1995 · 08/10/2019 20:37

I don’t want to be that person... but does it really matter? Do you have a reason why you dont want your number shared as I can’t see why anyone would be particularly interested? (No offence) If not, I wouldn’t worry. If anyone else has an issue let them complain Confused

Littlefish · 08/10/2019 20:45

That's really not on. We use an online learning journey where I work, and can send out messages to all parents via that, but no contact information is ever shared.

Our GDPR coordinator would shut down any suggestion of a WhatsApp group (unless it had been set up by the parents themselves, completely separate from any communication from the nursery).

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2019 20:48

The reason enough is "I don't want my number shared with a bunch of randoms without my consent".

There doesn't need to be a bigger reason. They shouldn't have shared the contact details.

PurplePuffinPicker · 08/10/2019 20:48

@Geneva1995 she gave a pretty good reason in the OP but aside from that there are plenty of other reasons why she might not want her number giving out.

spiritslevel · 08/10/2019 20:49

When my kid started infants 12 years ago one well organised mum has a teacher pop a note in each reading bag suggesting a mums night out, so usually only a few mums had your number. What's app didn't exist then or wasn't widely used. I'd detest that level of accessibility

DinoSn0re · 08/10/2019 20:50

You really can’t see why OP wouldn’t want parents of children that she teaches having her personal phone number @Geneva1995? If you can’t, you’re incredibly naive. Parents will probably use it to contact her during out of work hours, about issues that should be addressed through the school. Teachers (and anyone else) are entitled to privacy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/10/2019 20:57

This is a serious GDPR issue and also, imho, a huge safeguarding/possible child protection issue. Mention it to the nursery ASAP. If they do nothing I would seriously consider taking it to ESTYN/OFSTED

doodlejump1980 · 08/10/2019 21:06

Thanks everyone, glad I wasn’t over-thinking it.
@Geneva1995 if you read my full post, I’m a teacher to some of their older siblings at school. Can’t name one teacher who would want their personal mobile number sent to everyone at nursery?

OP posts:
neverornow · 08/10/2019 21:08

So parents of children that you currently teach now have your personal phone number via this group? Massive no-no! I'd leave the group and ask nursery to update you separately.

Scarlett555 · 08/10/2019 21:13

Just leave the group and make sure the nursery don't add you back in.

Had similar recently. My DD's school emailed all the parents in her class without blind copying in the email addresses so all our contact details were visible.

Then people started 'replying all' ... I doubt many schools and nurseries have as much knowledge of GDPR as businesses do. They should though!

doodlejump1980 · 08/10/2019 21:14

@neverornow yup. Have already left the group.

I would not be happy about this at all!

Draft an email to them outlining your concerns and ask how they plan to address this breach.
