Ecoil when to seek medical attention

Figaro88 · 08/10/2019 11:10

I think I may have caught Ecoil on holiday, symptoms started last Tuesday so 1 week to this point. I have watery bowel movements 15+ in a 24 hour period, have not eaten solid food for 1 week, managing to make myself drink 1 litre of water a day, it is a struggle. Horrendous stomach cramps and trouble weeing. I rang doctors earlier and was told by reception I didn't need to be seen. I have had a slight fever on and off, very weak and tired and not much colour to my skin. I have passed some blood but not a lot. Am I being a whimp here or should I insist I see a GP? And I fell dizzy when trying to stand up. Sorry for terrible wording of my post it was a struggle.

Sorry but why wouldn't you seek help for that? Receptionists are not medically trained.

Figaro88 · 08/10/2019 11:24

I thought I needed to be seen, I was told no I couldn't make an appointment for these symptoms I started to doubt myself. I am struggling to think straight at the moment, I will ring again and hopefully get somebody else.

I'm no doctor, but you definitely sound like you need to see one. E. coli can be serious, depending on the strain, it might not be e. coli but I think not being able to eat for a week, is enough of a reason to be able to see a doctor. Don't let the receptionist fob you off, get an appointment. Good luck.

At the very least the receptionist should make you a telephone appt with the GP to talk through your symptoms. They are the best judge of whether you need to be seen / need further investigations etc

ThelmaDinkley · 08/10/2019 11:50

You need to insist to speak to or see a dr. You sound like you have a nasty infection and E Coli can lead to kidney problems. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

HappyHammy · 08/10/2019 11:54

The receptionist is not there to triage. Ring back and book an appt. If it's a long wait to be seen call 111 for advice. When you're feeling better then let the practice manager know what receptionist said.

redchocolatebutton · 08/10/2019 11:59

you need to be seen.
there are other unpleasant bugs, like giardia, plus dehydration for this time could have an effect on your kidneys.

RainOrSun · 08/10/2019 12:07

What would you hope the GP could do?
My understanding, assuming you can continue to drink, and you dont pass more blood, is there is no specific treatment. I think the GP will tell you to go home, rest, and stay hydrated. NHS choices may have more info.

Figaro88 · 08/10/2019 12:18

I still haven't managed to get an appointment. I think I also have a UTI and when I do manage to see it burns, I feel like I need to see all the time but I just can't go. My kidney area lower/ middle back is also sore and tender to touch.

Forgot the GP, please call 111 and tell them your condition, it sounds horrible.

Hope you feel better soon

Figaro88 · 08/10/2019 12:20

I know I am dehydrated my wee is brown but can't get anymore fluid down.

Ask if you can submit a stool sample. The surgery can send it off for testing including e.coli

MrsPMT · 08/10/2019 12:30

You definitely sound like you need to see a GP, EColi needs antibiotics and if you have a UTI that needs antibiotics also.

Is your tongue dry? Because you are getting very dehydrated if so.

MrsPMT · 08/10/2019 12:31

Agree if you can't get a GP appointment today phone 111, you need to be seen IMO.

linentowel · 08/10/2019 12:36

Please be seen. I didn’t go and I was a 999 into hospital with E. coli when my husband couldn’t wake me at home.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 08/10/2019 12:40

I would think you would be dehydrated at this stage along with all the other issues. Honestly I think it’s an A&e job

HappyHammy · 08/10/2019 14:15

if your urine is dark and you haven't been able to eat anything, you have back pain, you really need medical attention, 111 or go to your nearest hospital.

ThelmaDinkley · 08/10/2019 14:53

Can you ask to speak to practice manager OP. You do sound poorly and need looking at. If you don’t get no joy with GP I would go to urgent care or a&e.

QuestionableMouse · 08/10/2019 19:57

How are you op?

Hope you've managed to see someone and are getting help!

MrsPMT · 09/10/2019 12:51

@Figaro88 hope you are ok and getting treatment. Am assuming you are in hospital on a drip, take care Flowers
