Afreshstart1 · 07/10/2019 19:44

Said by one of my friends after I said I hadn't planned to move to a bigger place as I was happy with my lot and enjoyed not worrying about paying the mortgage

She has just moved into big place big mortgage

Is homely a compliment or an insult?

OP posts:
GinasGirl · 07/10/2019 19:45

For me it's a compliment as homely is what I want to achieve. I do know though that it could be 'backhanded' so it depends on the context of the conversation I think.

RandomMess · 07/10/2019 19:46

I think it's a compliment, somewhere you feel relaxed, comfortable and at "home".

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 07/10/2019 19:46

Compliment id say.

Pagwatch · 07/10/2019 19:47

I would use it and take it as a compliment

I think there is a real knack to making a house feel like s home which has nothing to do with how much money has been spent.

I’ve got rooms on my house which have it and others that feel sterile

EskewedBeef · 07/10/2019 19:47

I was described as homely once Blush. I didn't take it as a compliment.

Relating to your house, it means cosy and comforting. I think it's a nice way to describe surroundings.

PickAChew · 07/10/2019 19:47

Surely, whatever her intentions, you can think, why, yes, actually, it is homely?

PorridgeAgainAbney · 07/10/2019 19:47

Totally depends on what sort of person your friend is and whether it's likely that it was a bit of a passive aggressive dig?

If I said it to someone it would be a compliment, if their home felt cosy, warm, lived in and had lots of personal touches.

Simonsaysitschristmas · 07/10/2019 19:47

I always use it as a massive compliment. To me it means you have nice decor, good furnishings and cosy lighting - somewhere people feel relaxed and welcomed.

Pagwatch · 07/10/2019 19:48

Calling a person homely isn’t a nice thing. But the person dating it might have meant ‘natural /fresh faced sort of thing

Dogwalks2 · 07/10/2019 19:49

Definitely compliment, I love it when people say my home is homely.
It means they feel relaxed and welcome.
If it’s from someone that has plastic covers on their sofa it meant unclean🤣🤣🤣

MyAuntyBadger · 07/10/2019 19:52

I would take it as a compliment.

RueCambon · 07/10/2019 19:52

Either way, id just say thank you :-) too late to say anything now, i know. But prople make different choices based on their priorities. That cant be new information to her!

PlasticPatty · 07/10/2019 19:58

'Homely' is usually applied to unattractive women. That's not good.

But a 'homely' home? Surely everyone wants a home to be 'homely'? I think it's good.

123rd · 07/10/2019 20:07

Hmmm...depends who said itSmile
It's like when a work colleague says'oh your hair looks nice...today'
Immediately I think, oh, must look shit every other day.
Personally if I said someone's house was homely that would be a compliment. It would mean I felt relaxed and comfy there. Nothing worse than not being comfortable

Rystall · 07/10/2019 20:14

Hmmm.. my very wealthy childhood friend said that about my parents house. She meant ‘so small’. It’s all about the context OP.

Sallyseagull · 07/10/2019 20:15

For me it's a compliment, when ove said it to someone I've meant it in a way so as to say their house is the kind of place I want to relax and I feel instantly at home there.

Mollypolly2610 · 07/10/2019 20:15

I would like that to be said to me. I’ve had - your house looks like a hotel! I took that as a bit of an insult!

Teddybear45 · 07/10/2019 20:16

Homely / cosy in relation to someone else’s home means small. Could also mean cluttered and small.

MayorPrentiss · 07/10/2019 20:17

Unless she has the kind of mansion you rattle around in I'd take it as a compliment. Homely makes me think warm, cosy, comfortable and generally lovely! She probably wanted to assure you that your decision was a good one.

LittleLongDog · 07/10/2019 20:18

If I said it I’d definitely be saying it as a compliment.

justfortoday4367 · 07/10/2019 20:18

My house has been described as homely home - I was initially taken aback thinking it was a insult. But they could see my reaction and said they meant it in a welcoming way - that they could relax in my house.

I’m currently redecorating living room 😂😂

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/10/2019 20:19

A homely house is a massive compliment. If we ever get sorted out its what I want, with a bit of a '70s vibe.

EdWinchester · 07/10/2019 20:19

For a house - not an insult.

For a woman - definitely.

onemorerose · 07/10/2019 20:20

I’d take it as a compliment, to mean it means welcoming warm and cosy. All the things I want my house to be.

DaveTheGhost · 07/10/2019 20:22

Oh I’d love someone to say my house is homely!.
