Hairdressers question about thinning scissors please

Some of you might have seen my previous post about my Grayson Perry haircut. I've been thinking, every time I used to go to the hairdressers they would use thinning scissors through the ends of my hair to take off some of the thickness (otherwise I end up looking like Wendolene from Wallace and Grommit). However, I have been to a few different hairdressers lately (long, irrelevant story) and each time I have suggested the thinning scissors they have poo-pooed me. The last one insisted that lots of layers would be better. It wasn't. The most recent one got rid of the layers. All of the layers. Leaving me with my current Grayson Perry 'do.

So, hairdressers, are thinning scissors out these days? How can I get hairdressers to use them on me? It is the only way my hair behaves itself.

How

I'm not a hairdresser but when I was getting my hair cut my hairdresser used them on my hair although it has been about 1.5 years since I used a hairdresser

Maybe if you see a senior stylist they’ll still use them?

My hairdresser still uses them but she would have trained about 30 years ago.

My friend trained as a hairdresser about 5 years ago. She was taught to use thinning scissors but said it is frowned upon especially in trendier salons, as it is seen as lazy and thinning sometimes hair out can be done with good technique rather than the scissors. She also said this is utter bullshit if you're dealing with s client with masses of hair (like me) where thinnig scissors are invaluable to get rid of some of the bulk. Just what she said but I too notice they aren't used as much these days, my hair is suffering for it.

I'm not a hairdresser and have very thick hair. My stomach sinks when the hairdresser pulls out the thinning scissors! It never grows back well and they usually end up chopping bits too short with them. I've always seen them as the lazy way to create layers.
My current hairdressers never use thinning scissors and she laboriously thins out my hair with regular hairdressing scissors, always doing an awesome job. It took me ages to find the perfect hairdresser, she's fab ⭐️

Thanks for replies. Kind of sums up what I thought might be the case. I understand they won't work on everyone but I have realised that my best haircuts that I have been happiest with have involved some thinning. I just can't manage layers! I just wish hairdressers would accept that I know my own hair.

Suggestion to get a senior stylist is good.

I have thick curly hair. It is layered but I do need the thinning scissors too otherwise it grows back in a big triangle from.my head. Grows much better thinned out. Got my hair cut last Sat with senior stylist at fairly trendy chain hairdressers and she used them.

I always ask for thinning scissors as I have masses of very fine hair. Haven’t had it refused yet.
