Can anyone recommend an electric bike?

I'm looking into getting one to ride for fun and fitness. I have angina so could do with a bit of help up hills. Not more than £500 and it doesn't need to be folding. They seems very expensive on Amazon but much cheaper at Halfords. Anywhere else I could look?

I should add - for both on and off road, although the off road would be an ex railway track and easy bridle paths - nothing too rough.

My DH just bought a great bike from Cycle Republic. He spent over a grand on it cos he needed one he could fold and the smaller ones were too small for him as he's tall and his knees came up to the handle bars! So he got a Raleigh and they service it for free after you have had it a few weeks. He had a puncture so they fixed that. So i'd recommend there. Good luck

Do you have a decent independent bike shop near you?
If so I would go there first rather than buy from Halfords, they will be far more in the know.

I got the Pendleton one from Halfords. It's a bit girly if you are a man squashyhat!
They were really good, ordered one into store for me to try without any compulsion to buy, then booked me an appointment to try it out with a trainer in their delivery yard, no charge.
I call it my magic carpet! Point to note, you can't get a basket to fit on the front, minor point though.

I have a Freego, but it was over £1,000

We've got a FreeGo too. We bought it after it had done a season as a hire bike (and had been thoroughly serviced) and it was a little over £800.
It's great.

Honestly? You can't buy a decent ordinary bike for under £500 new, never mind an electric bike. Electric bikes can be great, but there are downsides too. If you run out of battery life on a ride you are basically left with a very heavy regular bike which is much harder to pedal than an ordinary bike. Cheap electric bikes tend to be heavier and have less good battery life, less sophisticated motors etc which is probably ok if you just want one to pop to the shops or for a commute where you can easily recharge at either end of the journey. But if you want more than that you may well be heading for the "buy cheap, buy twice" trap. All bikes depreciate very quickly so it is well worth looking at second hand ones. However, take care, especially over the state of the batteries. I would consult a reputable independent bike shop for advise if I were you - they may have trade ins for sale as well as new ones.
