He's 8 months and 1st tooth is cutting through but it doesn't look like I thought it would. Does it look ok?

No, it doesn't. It looks really sore - is it bothering him? I think I'd get that looked at tbh. When my DC's teeth came through there was a white bit of tooth visible as it pushed through the gum that gradually got bigger.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 06/10/2019 18:56

Not normal. Has he banged it?

Stillmonday · 06/10/2019 18:57

He's been his normal self, happy & giggling so I wouldn't say it's particularly bothering him. Still breastfeeding and eating solids ok too 😕

There’s several things that could be
I’d get the dentist to have a look. Might be nothing but at least you’d know

Windinmyhair · 06/10/2019 19:27

mine had a sort of blood blister which the dentist said was quite normal - could it be one of those that has burst?

YouMaySayImADreamer · 06/10/2019 19:27

This can be normal...there is a name for it, I can't remember what it is sorry but it happened to one of my ds's back teeth and it was fine. It is sort of a collection of blood/blood blister that develops around the tooth. It sort itself out. Obviously if you become worried I would check with the dentist.

User24689 · 06/10/2019 19:29

Hi OP. My son's teeth have looked like this when they have been beneath the surface. He gets black spots before the teeth break. Odd, because my first child's first sign of teeth was the white of the tooth. My son's teeth are totally fine and normal once through.

I would get it looked at to be on safe side, but would not be overly concerned.

jomaIone · 06/10/2019 19:31

One of my babies teeth looked similar, it's just the flood around it like a bruise or blood blister. If he's not distressed and Calpol helps if he gets grouchy then I wouldn't be particularly concerned. I bet it disappears or at least reduces by the morning.

jomaIone · 06/10/2019 19:33

Is it not normally bottom teeth first though?

Stillmonday · 06/10/2019 19:34

I'll see how he is tomorrow but he's been totally fine today, he's asleep now so fingers crossed it looks better tomorrow.
Do dentists see babies this little ???

It looks like a little eruption cyst to me, which is absolutely nothing to worry about. It happens sometimes and the tooth should erupt as normal it can just be a bit slower

If you are worried a dentist will of course see your baby but it looks perfectly 'normal' to me

CameraTime · 06/10/2019 19:39

Have you registered him with a dentist? If not, phone your own dentist and see if they can have a quick look.

I'm fairly sure one of DS' teeth did something like that, and was absolutely fine, but I can't remember for sure.

If it's not bothering him, I wouldn't be too worried, but get it checked out in case it becomes troublesome.

CameraTime · 06/10/2019 19:41

@BlueCornsihPixie eruption cyst was what DS had, thanks! OP, google "eruption cyst" and compare. It's not remotely serious if that's what it is.

TwatCat · 06/10/2019 19:43

Is it not normally bottom teeth first though?

Both mine cut their upper lateral incisors first, they looked like mini vampires. They also had little blisters like this when they cut their lower teeth.

CTRL · 06/10/2019 19:44

Make sure you brush it even though there is no tooth yet.

My friends child’s Firth tooth started to look like that when her son started growing teeth and it was that the bottom of the tooth wasn’t being brushed so it was rotting - even though her son was still just drinking milk and not on solids yet.

Stillmonday · 06/10/2019 19:47

I'm not sure it's an eruption cyst looking at google images it doesn't look anything like that. I can actually feel his little tooth coming through so I think his gum is just sore from splitting open. I'll check again in the morning and ring a dentist if he's not happy.

I agree with BlueCornsihPixie

Merename · 06/10/2019 20:04

Yes they do, I think they recommend to come from 6mo plus so they can get used to the general experience. I also think that looks like he’s knocked it and may not even be tooth cutting - I know there’s variation, but it’s the bottom two that tend to come first. As long as he seems happy though, I’m sure it’s not a big deal.

Duckegg271 · 06/10/2019 20:18

DS had a tooth come through when he was 8 (an early back molar) it looked the same, like a blood blister under the surface. Dentist said it was nothing to worry about and sure enough the tooth came through and the blister went.

As it’s your baby’s first tooth I’d get it check just for peace of mind.

CameraTime · 06/10/2019 20:37

The dentist won't mind taking a look at all - it'll take about 20 seconds to have a look and say whether it's anything serious or not (I can't imagine anything serious it could be, to be honest, but I'm not any kind of expert). It needn't even take up an appointment slot, tbh. Ring in the morning and see what they say.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 06/10/2019 20:39

DD2 teeth looked like this. I brushed and the blister burst and went away.

NoDontLookAtMeImShy · 06/10/2019 20:42

This happened to my 9 month old. Top teeth as well.

I just assumed he did it on a toy. He was happy and unbothered by it and his teeth came through no problem.

Lifeinthedeep · 06/10/2019 20:45

My son had this about a week before his top tooth cut through (a few days ago). I just thought his gum was bleeding! I was concerned and then it disappeared and a tooth followed Confused

Stillmonday · 06/10/2019 21:01

Very reassuring thank you everyone! 😊
