Would you drink this gin?

Because it has these odd cloudy bits floating in it and, desperate as I am for gin, I'm not convinced.

It's cranberry gin, and I made it last Christmas with sugar and orange peel and cranberries. Can flavoured gin go mouldy?

Hoping the pic will attach.

Would you drink this gin?

Oh dear. You are probably right.Sad

Right, this Christmas I am drinking ALL the gin.

Would the bits be the orange peel and cranberries? I think maybe taste it ?

The bits are probably from the cranberries or peel.
I would strain it and then taste it.
If you only made it last Christmas, I would have thought it would be fine!

ginhelp · 06/10/2019 18:09

Great username, AllTheGin!

I'm afraid it's not the sugar and orange peel, as all the additions were sieved out when I made it. It's just cloudy floaty bits that look suspiciously like mould.

Usually I'd say 'sod it' and drink it, but I have a rare day off tomorrow and can't afford to spend it chucking up. Or worse.

My memory of what I was prepared to drink as a student makes me shudder, Josepheen...

www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-make-flavoured-gin

BBC good food reckons that if stored correctly, flavoured gin can last up to a year. I would be tempted to give it a go, I don’t reckon much would grow in that percentage of alcohol.

Jesse70 · 06/10/2019 18:20

It will be fine

ginhelp · 06/10/2019 18:27

Now I am conflicted. Do I want to drink what is looking more and more like a pink snow globe?

OP posts:
Hefzi · 06/10/2019 18:37

Drink it! I make lots of gin infusions, keep them years on end sometimes and have yet to fall prey to the curse of the cloudy bits. In extremis, I'll run it through a coffee filter-so do that or muslin etc and it'll be fine.

I figure the alcohol keeps the bugs at bay Smile

Ok, deferring the decision by straining it through muslin.

It smells so good.

Tragically, gin is about the only thing I can drink at my advanced age (forty-ahem) without suffering hideous hangovers.

Unlikely to get mould growth or bacterial growth with something that high % alcohol. It's prob just something else. Enjoy it!

TreacherousPissFlap · 06/10/2019 20:18

Meh, I'd drink it as I am an extreme omnivore.

DH would look doubtfully at it and fret so much that the world would fall out of his arse with extreme stress Grin

bakesalesally · 06/10/2019 22:18

Are you still with us @ginhelp ?

I would also have drank it.

TheHauntedFishtank · 06/10/2019 22:20

I’m very jealous, my plum gin only lasted til February. Not because it went mouldy obviously.

Thehagonthehill · 06/10/2019 22:26

Did you just seive it?
I seive first and then put through a fine mesh/jelly bag so that it is clear
The ones I don't look like this and are fine.If there was mould it would for where at the top where it meets air not in the bits in the middle of the bottle.
If you don't want it I could give it a good home here.Smile

SpoonBlender · 06/10/2019 22:32

flavoured gin can last up to a year

Bugger, that's my five year vintage sloe gin officially out the window then.

Not a chance, it's lovely!

ginhelp · 06/10/2019 22:37

I am alive. But that might be because I haven't been brave enough to drink it yet. Grin

It has been strained through muslin three times and filtered into a clean bottle. So I might give it a go tomorrow, when my day off has relaxed me so much that I stop being like PissFlap's DH.

And Thehagonthehill makes a very good point about the mould being where it touches the air. If I wasn't two floors above the gin and already in bed, I would pour myself one now. Feeling reassured.

Will report back if I survive when I try it.

Josepheen I have just googled poitín. I am now educated, and very impressed that you retained your faculties, and indeed - I am assuming - your eyesight. My wee bottle of cranberry gin feels very tame in comparison.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/10/2019 22:43

I drank 2 year old mince pie flavoured vodka last year, it was very cloudy, I assumed it was just the spices etc. I hopefully was just the spices anyway!! It was gorgeous and I'm still here a year later.

Go for it and report back!

Drink it, I make slow gin and even going through a sieve and a muslin I still get bits.
