Anyone had a pinched nerve?

Afternoon everyone

I had a car accident beginning of this year. Was told I had whiplash so completed a course of physio and just pushed on with it. Busy at work, busy at home, but always a nagging pain in neck which I thought would eventually resolve.

Also developed some time later a weird pain and numbness down one arm and excruciating pain in hand - thought this was something new.

Anyway, I had a second offer of about 2.5k a week ago from car accident. Was planning to accept. My own doctor sent me for a scan a month or so ago and it’s just come back with cervical radiculopathy- I received results over the phone but can’t get an appointment to discuss with gp for a week. Apparently it’s a pinched nerve.

Has anyone had this? What treatment will I need? I just need the pain to bugger off now, although im glad to know why.

I’ll also inform solicitor but not sure if this is related? Anyone had this condition?

Thanks for reading and for any replies.

Yes. Whiplash injury in 1980s, was put in a rigid neck brace but recovered.

Some years later I got the nerve pains down one side, mainly my right arm.

Treatment was to sit on a hospital bed and my neck put in traction. It felt that the machine was going to life my head off but wasn’t painful and it was actually very relaxing.

Very effective.

You could try this as I saw another poster recommend it

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01MY2BVA3?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I bought it and can confirm it works.

I had nerve involvement with a rotator cuff injury and saw a sports physio for manipulation to release it. It left me bruised from neck to elbow and down to my waist and was agony while he was doing it, but the relief was amazing. I also had infrared treatment to reduce the inflammation

I thought they had stopped using neck collars? Never heard of traction so will look this up. Thank you

Thanks - I am thinking I need more physio. Ashamed to admit I have no idea what the difference is between a physio or a chiropractor. I will definitely need something.

I’ll look into the infrared treatment too. Never heard of this but prepared to try anything (if not too costly).

@CervicalRadiculothopy yes they don’t use collars nowadays. My accident where I was the passenger in the back seat of a car that got hit happened before seat belts were compulsory in the back!

Traction looks bloody painful!

Physio is probably your best bet I had physio for a trapped nerve in my shoulder which worked well.
Chiropractor deals with 'subluxations' in your spine which they think is linked to other ailments in the body. The science behind this is woolly at best.

I got recommendations from friends and saw a sports physio, although they don't only deal with sports injuries. My initial appointment was £60 and each subsequent appointment was £40 in the south West. I think I had 4 or 5 appointments in total.

CervicalRadiculothopy · 06/10/2019 13:31

Subluxations is another word I’ve never heard of. Feeling dense!

Could this be due to the accident many months later? Obviously I’ll ask the solicitor/doctor but just wondering today (as could really do without paying for physio or waiting months for NHS).

Also unsure whether to settle. Was looking forward to treating the kids to a Merry Christmas with the money!

4 or 5 treatments I could afford at that rate - but not if I needed lots more sessions. I guess they couldn’t say until I have a further assessment.

Traction was not painful for me. The first time it did feel weird as I was worried that the machine wouldn’t stop and keep going until my neck was stretched like a giraffe! 😂

It does stop though and brings instant relief.

The inflatable neck thing is great as occasionally I get twinges in my arm when I’ve been walking/hiking for more than my usual length of time.

It’s easy to use.

CervicalRadiculothopy · 06/10/2019 13:47

Thanks Soola, I’ll have a look at it
