Putting your own artwork up in your own house - is it cringey?

I used to make and sell papercuts as a job before I had my twins. I developed a way to turn photographs into layered pieces and developed it using stills from film, TV etc as well as family photos.

Quite a few of the film based ones sold but I mainly did commissions - I still have a stash in a drawer (there are probably 20 or so of various sizes from A4 up to A2).

I only have one on the wall, which is one I made for Christmas for DH one year.

Since I don’t have a shop any more they’re not going to sell and I’m worried about them getting damaged just knocking around but it feels a bit narcissistic to put my own work all over the walls!

What do you think? FWIW we have a lot of wall space especially hall, landing / stairs and our bedroom so maybe I put them up and then replace them over time?

I think its normal, I've got sonething I did for baby DS up in our room (he finds it scary!), my DGMs flat is full of my late grandads watercolours, another friend is an aspiring artists and her oil paintings are at her mums.

LoseLooseLucy · 06/10/2019 12:09

I'm going to say no, not cringey. I have paintings up in my house that I have done (children's rooms and landing) and some family members have others I've done at theirs. I say put them up and enjoy them.

PullingMySocksUp · 06/10/2019 12:10

Not at all cringey. Smile

SinkGirl · 06/10/2019 12:14

That’s good - I was worried people would come in and think wow, what an arrogant cow 😂

I have paintings up that my mum did but it feels different somehow!

I will get some frames then. Some of them took forever and it seems sad to have them stuck in a drawer!

I have made some little embroidery hoops which hang in the children's room. Another textile wall hanging I made is in communal space. I think it's fine. They are part of you and it's your home

FriedasCarLoad · 06/10/2019 12:16

Not cringey at all - I love seeing personal things up in people’s houses, rather than ikea prints!

Soola · 06/10/2019 12:16

Why not display them in your home and if beloved guests comment on them you have the option to make a sale or bestow them with a treasures gift.

You have my sympathies - every year I make toys for DT’s birthdays and they just get tossed aside. Sniff. Hopefully one day they’ll appreciate them.

Very good point!

I hope not because I have paintings, embroidery hoops, knitted throws and loads of other bits and pieces I've made!

LightDrizzle · 06/10/2019 12:20

I’ve got a couple up and it sounds like I’m not as good as you.
As long as we don’t point them out to visitors and expect compliments, it’s not vain. I doubt most people notice as I have other paintings and prints up, including two done by my mum.

BishopFrownofStThigh · 06/10/2019 12:23

No that's brilliant - would love to see if you're happy posting!

I myself have a spectacular framed painting of my own artwork

Done when I was aged 6 but it's great the way kids artwork can be and prophetic as I saw the same thing 20 years later.

HillRunner · 06/10/2019 12:24

Not cringey at all. DH and I enjoy photography and have had a fair few of our better photos blown up and framed for the wall. It's part of who you are, and they were made to be enjoyed.

I would far rather see someone display their own art/photography/needlework/etc. on their walls than a bland stock photo from Ikea.

Ambidexte · 06/10/2019 12:32

Defo not cringy. Sounds a great idea.

A friend of mine is a well-respected professional artist and her home has a number of her own works hanging in it - I think they're the ones she particularly fell in love with, or felt were personal, and wanted to keep for herself.

It makes it more "her" house, if you see what I mean. I think it's lovely.

IsadoraQuagmire · 06/10/2019 12:40

Not at all cringey, and nothing at all wrong with being proud of your own work either!

SinkGirl · 06/10/2019 12:40

Great, I will order some frames and have a sort through. Hopefully they haven’t had too many bits fall off.

I don’t have many photos on this phone but here are a few old ones :)

it doesn't matter if randoms think it was cringey, it's your home and your choice how you decorate it. i think it's nice to see your work on display and not just hidden away. you spend time, effort and money on doing those pieces, enjoy them and feel proud that they are yours.

BishopFrownofStThigh · 06/10/2019 12:55

Enjoyed seeing those, thank you :)

CactusAndCacti · 06/10/2019 13:02

No not cringey at all. I really like it when I visit someone at home (work) and they point out their art work.

CakeNinja · 06/10/2019 13:07

I have some photos I have taken blown up and put up in the house (although only in places visitors don’t really go like our en-suite and the top hallway).
I don’t think it’s cringey unless you stop at them and tell your visitors that you did/made/took them!
Much more personal than, as a pp pointed out, the same ikea print that anyone could have. It’s what makes a house your home.

Gingernaut · 06/10/2019 13:09

People stick their own photos up on the walls and they took no effort at all.

Why not?

SinkGirl · 06/10/2019 13:27

That’s a good point! I don’t think twice about putting photos up.

My favourite one is a giant photo of Dexter’s head, might scare the kids so should probably keep that one stashed 😂

I have some of my own photos on the walls. They’re more arty than family snaps and I like to see them, so why not.

WildCherryBlossom · 06/10/2019 14:10

They are lovely OP!

WildCherryBlossom · 06/10/2019 14:13

MrsPellegrino's post got me looking around my house and actually it's full of stuff DH and I have made. Cushions made with fabric I screen printed, quilts, chairs I have upholstered, furniture DH has made from scratch. Not exactly art but it is full of things we have created.
