Just that really am struggling to find a nice golden sandy beach that doesnt look packed in August. Any ideas? Spain, South of France or Italy.

In August?

I think you're going to find that almost impossible to find.

Ginfordinner · 06/10/2019 11:31

Loads, but nowhere will be quiet in August. What about going at May half term instead?

Yoollyball · 06/10/2019 11:34

Alcudia - down at the Playa de Muro end - won't be quiet but beach is massive and very safe for little ones. Hotels and beach bars directly on the beach. It was ideal when our dds were little.

eavers · 06/10/2019 11:37

I agree may half term would be quieter but the weather isnt as reliable and the sea and pools would be colder.

Some of the south Brittany beaches are quiet in August

Castelldefels near Barcelona is fairly quiet as it’s mostly Spanish holiday makers. The beach is nice and shallow. There aren’t big fancy all inclusive places but it’s a nice town and only half an hour from Barcelona in the train. We enjoyed our August holiday there and would return.

Gruissan, in the South-West of France. Huge sandy beach, almost entirely only French people, but plenty of space for everyone. There's a great collection of wooden holiday chalets on stilts right next to the beach - it's where Betty Blue was filmed. And day trips to Carcasonne and Narbonne are really easy. We also did a tour of a winery, rafting in the mountains, the DC went horse riding in the evening, we went up to a medieval castle in the Pyrenees. All that was in addition to lazing on the beach. It was a fab holiday.
The one catch - because there is always one: the beach was a bit windy so a portable windbreak would be advised.

Not any of the countries you've said but we were in Corfu this August and went to Kalamaki beach. Stayed in Kassiopi. It was amazing. Warm, walk out for miles into the sea, not too busy at all. My son said it was the best beach he's ever been to.

‘Quiet’ and ‘August’ are mutually exclusive.

Perhaps a very small, very obscure Greek island? As for the Mediterranean coasts of France and Spain, forget it.

Grafittiqueen · 06/10/2019 12:05

No beach is going to be quiet in August. The Mar Menor is very gently sloping.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/10/2019 12:06

If Germany is one of those countries that goes back to school in mid August, somewhere like Paguera in Mallorca could be an option in the second half of the month - or any other Med resort that attracts mostly Germans or Scandinavians.

3 lovely sandy beaches, nice pedestrianised area, Spanish food available, good choice of accomodation, but smallish family orientated resort. Just happens that most tourists who go there are German to the extent that all the menus are in Spanish and German and maybe English.

We've been very late August and don't remember it being crowded crowded and if it had been expensive, we wouldn't have gone because we do not pay school holiday prices.

Costa Brava - mix of big and small beaches, not too many resorts

skippetyskoo · 06/10/2019 12:16

Lots of beaches in France eg in Brittany and vendee are quiet in August. Such long stretches of coast that you can always find a pretty much deserted beach if you avoid the beach town sections. Further south along the western coast it can get choppy though

QueenofLouisiana · 06/10/2019 13:43

We went just north of Gruissan as mentioned by a PP to Narbonne Plage. The beach goes on for miles. Some parts are busier than others, but even the busiest wasn’t heaving.

itsgettingweird · 06/10/2019 13:52

Vias place in south of France is very gently shelving/shallow.

It doesn't get horrendously busy either because it tends to only serve the campsites on the road down there

Mentounasc · 06/10/2019 22:44

@BarbaraofSeville The Problem with German school Holidays is that Education is Federal in a Country with 17 different states - each with their own holidays. And often they're deliberately staggered to avert transport chaos. So it means that this year Berlin started in late June and went back on 5 August (that was fun!), while Bavaria would only just have started and won't ever be back until mid-September. So the German holidays essentially stretch from circa 21 June to 15 Sept. No escaping the Germans in mid-summer!

OP I second the suggestion of an obscure (ish) Greek island. Serifos is an easy ferry ride from Athens with beautiful sloping sandy beaches, ideal for families. I have been in July, where it was quite busy on the most popular beaches but not horrendously so. Seemed to be at least 80% Greek families, if that matters to you.
