Cleaning advice needed! Cat pee and rucksacks

My elderly cat has found his way into my cupboard and has been peeing on my ancient Karrimore rucksack. I've got a horrible feeling its been going on for quite some time. I've hosed it down but it still stinks of pee.

Any thoughts? I'm worried it will damage the rucksack if I soak it in detergent.

I Have been known to put a rucksack in the washing machine. We hike a lot, in all sorts of weather, and the rucksacks get filthy. I haven't noticed they have been damaged by the washing.

I washed my child’s rucksack in a normal wash in the washing machine last week as it got pet pee on it, came out as good as new

You can get a pee neutraliser on amazon, which removes the smell and sorts out stains etc. Pets at home has it, too. Spray on, leave for a while then wash. Not sure what it will do to the waterproofing though...can you reproof them?

It really does remove the smell.

Thanks for the tips.

It's too big for the washing machine and has a rigid frame, which |I can't see how to remove. Will try some spray and see what happens.

Any further thoughts welcome!

Before you buy special stuff trying soaking it in warm water with bio washing detergent and a cup or two of vinegar. The enzymes in the detergent break down the proteins and the vinegar neutralises the ammonia. It works to clean up accidents too (sounds like the rucksack was a deliberate not an accident).

Wash it in the bath?
Then put on the line to rinse with the hose an drip dry
