Things I have learnt solely due to Mumsnet

I was having a think today about various things that I had never heard of until I read about them on Mumsnet. Trivial stuff, 'general knowledge' type stuff, language stuff, history, all sorts really.

I had never heard of an Eleanor Cross.

Had never heard of the term 'wedding breakfast'.

Didn't know about how funerals differ around the UK.

Have learnt so much about feminism and how things that I had never previously considered actually have an impact on my life. I don't know where I would ever have come across that information if it weren't for Mumsnet.

There are so many more, but those popped into my head.

What's yours?

That the smell of fish can indicate an electrical problem (swift call to the electrician following that thread Shock).
The wonders of zoflora.
How strong women can be in some of the worst domestic situations.

Silverysurfer.....I'm not mocking, I'm sure David has saved many of us unknowingly Blush I'm glad he was instrumental in your recovery. It was the "fanny gallops" comment that had me laughing Grin

EssentialHummus · 06/10/2019 21:11

MN helped name my DD, so that was useful Grin.

Patriarchy chicken.

The extent to which people live different lives / have different challenges to me. I think I took a lot of things for granted before joining MN (but it has also hardened my outlook on a few topics best not mentioned here).

SilverySurfer · 06/10/2019 21:21

Joyfulincolour - made me laugh too Grin

Totally agree with you roisinagusniamh and the women are with these losers for years and have multiple children and then complain about them on here when they have enabled the man child for all that time and suddenly don't understand why they won't change.

They talk about these men being from the 1950s like it was normal back then but I was a child of the 1940's/50s and my father never behaved like that. Despite working long hours he always did his share of housework and child caring.

SproutsRock · 06/10/2019 21:27

@Gertie75 err seaweed here is definitely seaweed not cabbage 😧

I have learnt posters blagging it.

Literally the solution to everyone's problems is a Spa Day 😂

cantkeepawayforever · 06/10/2019 21:34

That planning a menu to use up every scrap of a chicken over the course of several days isn't the norm. I genuinely thought my Second-World-War-and-church-mouse-poverty influenced meal planning, handed down from my mother and grandma, was completely normal.

That some teachers and schools are AWFUL.

SproutsRock · 06/10/2019 22:00

@Alicatz66 I had never heard of it until last week when my DC had theirs, walking in their Harry Potter Gowns into the cathedral!

CallarMorvern · 07/10/2019 03:37

I already knew about the Eleanor Crosses as we lived just down the road from the place where Eleanor of Castile died. I named my daughter Eleanor Smile

Freddiemercuarysmoustache · 07/10/2019 06:06

Whats a curtain wiper?? And why is Giovanni from strictly one? Confused

ALemonyPea · 07/10/2019 06:14

When shaving in the shower, you can hold the shaver under your boob for safe keeping while you soap up 😁 only works if you have biggish norms though

On a serious note, I importantly learnt that most Muslim women wear a headscarf because they want to, not because they are being forced to. I had never had the opportunity to speak to anyone Muslim before joining MN.

FatimaLovesBread · 08/10/2019 13:00

@Freddiemercuarysmoustache apparently it's the kind of man who would have "liasons' with you and then wipe his errr "member" on the curtain on the way out ConfusedGrin

Disclaimer, I'm sure he has perfectly nice bedroom etiquette, it was a comment on an old strictly thread and my post was somewhat tongue in cheek

ChaosTrulyReigns · 08/10/2019 13:35

Never to Google Dragon Butter.

In Tolden Days that would have been first response.

I’ve learned that my occasional purchase of zoflora is actually a big thing on here
My friend works where it is made as well.

I’ve loved my time on here. I wish I’d known about it when my marriage went pear shaped in 2004. You would’ve had me handing him his arse on a plate.

I love the woo threads.

It’s great to be part of this community.
Long may it last and long may it continue to be a place of education and entertainment

My wedding dress was found online by a mumsnetter.

AliceLittle · 08/10/2019 14:03

I learnt how to budget which helped me pay off £5k credit card debt

horse4course · 08/10/2019 14:12

Just how much knowledge and experience it takes to run a house and look after kids

JocastaJones · 08/10/2019 14:20

How many men are absolutely awful to their partners and ex partners. How often women are screwed over after separation. MN will definitely make you a feminist and that's even if you don't read the feminist boards.

Grimbles · 08/10/2019 14:31

That the mental load is a thing.

That some people will troll about the most bizarre things.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 08/10/2019 14:49

MN has taught me to be a lot more considerate of other women. So many on here talk about anxiety issues, toxic relationships and other problems that ate invisible to outsiders. I’m a lot less judgmental now but also a little more cautious with people I don’t know well.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 08/10/2019 14:50

MM has also taught me that parking rights are not to be trifled with!

TulipsTulipsTulips · 08/10/2019 14:51

Also, MN has taught me that I was BU on quite a few occasions! Fair enough and lessons learned.

FatimaLovesBread · 08/10/2019 16:48

Yes @ChaosTrulyReigns I did think that

Interesting @dowser maybe I know your friend as I also have friends who work there

PlaceYourItemInTheBaggingArea · 08/10/2019 18:08

Never to Google Dragon Butter

So I've obviously just Googled Dragon Butter, and now agree with @ChaosTrulyReigns
