Things to do in Dublin

My fiance and I are going to Dublin on Tuesday for 2 nights. Our flight times we will allow us to have pretty much 2.5 days in the city.

It was a super last minute decision (we booked it this morning) and neither of us have ever been before.

What are the must-see/must-do things? Any recommendations for food, live music? Any things/places to avoid?

Where will you be staying?

mamadrama1986 · 05/10/2019 19:08

@TheCatsACunt, that's a good point! We will be staying in Mount Brown.

The hop on hop off bus or great for getting your bearings, 14 Henrietta St and the Little Museum for some history.

Temple Bar is lively if you like that kind of thing.
I didn’t think I’d like the Guinness Factory but it’s actually pretty interesting and the bar at the top has lovely views.
Agree about the hop on hop off bus to work out what’s what on the first day.

Touristy stuff? Guinness Storehouse, kilmainham gaol, at Patrick's cathedral, whiskey museum, leprechaun or wax museum.

Nice dinner, drinks, buzzy nightlife? Camden street, George's st, powerscourt area, William st

Shopping- powerscourt, Grafton st area

DownstairsMixUp · 05/10/2019 19:19

We went:

Guinness tour
Lepricorn museum
St Patrick cathedral
St Stephens green

We visited temple bar to :)

Cadisainmduit · 05/10/2019 19:22

Book of Kells in Trinity College

isabellerossignol · 05/10/2019 19:23

The museum in the GPO in O'Connell Street is great.

Then go to JW Sweetman for a tasting platter of miniature beers, and a sharing plate of bread, salami and cheese.

MadisonAvenue · 05/10/2019 19:35

DownstairsMixUp I went in the Leprechaun Museum when I took my son when he was 15. I asked him what he wanted to do, he went into the tourist info place and came out with a flyer for that.

4 years later I still can't decide whether it was worth doing or not. It seemed a bit expensive for what was essentially a walk through various rooms while being told folk tales.

snuffykins · 05/10/2019 19:45

The hop on hop off bus tour is great. And I say that as someone who works in Dublin city centre and lives just outside Dublin! I really enjoyed it.

Avoid the wax museum at all costs.

Kilmainham gaol is great. Really recommend that.

Only have 1 drink in the temple bar pub in temple bar, it's super expensive.

Elephant and castle in temple bar is great for food, particularly their chicken wings.

Lots of other good suggestions given here too.

motorcyclenumptiness · 05/10/2019 20:27

There are free walking tours that leave from the big pointy thing on O'Connell St (on my to-do list)

ForalltheSaints · 05/10/2019 22:06

I last went about 20 years ago and remember how interesting Kilmainham Gaol was.

northernstars · 05/10/2019 22:58

Be careful in that part of town! You will be near Guinness and Royal Hospital/Kilmainham Gaol. Drinking around Fade Street, Georges Street - Temple Bar ok during the day - would swerve it at night. Grafton Street and Henry Street are mainly British shops anyway - I'd recommend the streets off Grafton - Drury Street, Georges Street etc. Little Museum is supposed to be really good and if it's a nice day Stephens Green is nice.

mamadrama1986 · 05/10/2019 23:23

@northernstars, careful in what sense? The Air bnb listing described the area as friendly and safe....

Thanks for all the suggestrions, we've got lots of options it seems.

Just be aware on the streets of Dublin especially at night, there are a good number of junkies and people out to rob what they can. We Irish are very friendly but not as friendly as we where. Temple bar is a bit expensive especially at night but there is the Fleet and Bowes on Fleet street for a quite pint or the Boars head on capel street but that is on the Northside of the Liffey. It is a great city but you still need to think safe like in any city.

MrHaroldFry · 05/10/2019 23:40

OP. I'm from Dublin originally.
Guinness storehouse is good, Kilmainham
Jail if you interested in the origins of the Irish state. Grafton Street and Trinity Collage area is lively. The Viking Splash tour is fun and informative.
Mount Brown wouldn't be the most salubrious of areas so just be watchful.

Emilizz34 · 05/10/2019 23:51

Mount Brown would not be a particularly safe area to stay in . Would definitely avoid walking around there at night . Take a taxi at night .
Take a hop on hop off tour .
The Guinness Storehouse is the top attraction . Also visit the Book of Kells in Trinity College .
The Grafton St area is mainly uk high st shops but if you explore the areas off it , you will find some lovely quirky shops .
Buy a visitors leap card to use on Dublin bus , Luas ( tram) and Dart ( light railway ) .
