Best board game suitable for a 5 year old?

Any recommendations? I'm looking for a board game the whole family can play. Something a step up from those Orchard games. Maybe a classic like junior game of life or something new. Nothing messy or rude themed like that doggy poo one. I have enough of that chat as it is. Confused
He's pretty smart but want to avoid anything too difficult that he'll just get fed up with quickly.

We used to have a Minions game of life which my DD’s loved when they were younger.

Have a look at Peaceable Kingdom. They make cooperative board games. Mole Rats in Space is a good one. As is Hoot Owl
Hoot and Race to the Treasure.
Also ThinkFun has a bunch of board games that can be played solo.
Otherwise what about old favourites like Scrabble and Monopoly?

Magic maze kids, my 5 year old likes this. Have you got a game cafe nearby you could go try before you buy?

My ds used to love Frustration!

Simonsaysitschristmas · 05/10/2019 11:00

Ludo?

Tidypidy · 05/10/2019 11:03

My dc love card games - go fish, chase the lady, all sailed away, rummy, uno, top trumps etc. Also scrabble in teams, scattergories, snakes and ladders, backgammon, monopoly, jenga. Pencil and paper games are good too - beetle drive, adding to the drawing, bingo. Sunday night is games night in our house so we play a lot!

Outfoxed

It's a collaborative board game so you either all win or all lose, against the fox. It's a bit like Cluedo. Plus it plays in about 15mins.

HuloBeraal · 05/10/2019 11:04

Also Qwirkle. My 7 year old and his mates love it.

Thingywhatsit · 05/10/2019 11:13

My 5 yr old likes monopoly junior - it’s actually ok and we can rope in the teenagers to play it too as they say it ain’t bad for a kids game! Plus they say it’s better than normal monopoly as it doesn’t go on for ever!

wendz86 · 05/10/2019 11:23

Monopoly junior is a winner here too.

Superlooper · 05/10/2019 11:27

My 5 year old loved the junior version of Game of Life

emmaluvseeyore · 05/10/2019 11:30

Dobble is a great game for all ages. I used to play it with the 4 year old I babysat and he used to be able to beat me fair and square.

AppleKatie · 05/10/2019 11:37

Dibble, junior monopoly both brilliant options

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 05/10/2019 11:39

We have party monopoly which always goes down well. They tend to prefer card games though so uno is a form favourite as is a new one we got on holiday, colour addict. And the classics with a deck of cards - beggar my neighbor, old maid, gin rummy, etc.

hairyheadphones · 05/10/2019 11:41

Labyrinth is a really good game.

Hungry hippo

nothoughts · 05/10/2019 11:45

Mine loves ludo, dobble, snakes and ladders and uno ( I found a card holder helped with small hands).

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/10/2019 11:54

Candyland or Chutes and Ladders

QueenOfCatan · 05/10/2019 11:54

Quirkle is a good one. Normal board games can be adapted too, I have my 2yo playing a heavily adapted roads only version of Carcassonne, we'll add the rest of the elements as she grows. Rummikub works well with kids. Catan can be adapted easily enough and they have a junior version.

GrumpiestCat · 05/10/2019 12:03

I love playing cards and Cheat is a good card game which you can play with normal cards. I've seen very small kids pick it up quite quickly! Usually if they watch the grown ups play they get the idea and want to join in catching the adults out!

Divvy up cards and each player takes a turn to to put the next number up down in the middle but face down. Except you can lie and not place the next number down (usually because it's not in your hand). Other players can accuse anyone of being a "cheat!" By shouting that out. Then the card is revealed. If it is the next one in order the accuser takes the whole stack if not the cheater takes the whole stack. The aim is to use all your cards.

Uno is great too. Variations on monopoly get slated but we loved Pugopoly Grin A nice detailed snakes and ladders is good.

wonkylegs · 05/10/2019 12:03

Card game rather than a board game - Dobble
My 3yo can play it with the rest of us even though it was actually bought for his 11yo brother and he's quite quick

TimeIhadaNameChange · 05/10/2019 12:07

Picturika goes down well with the children I know.

mummagirl · 05/10/2019 12:14

Monopoly junior
Frustration was a huge hit too

happypotamus · 05/10/2019 12:22

Junior Monopoly. DD1 got this when she was 5 or 6 and still enjoys it at 8, DD2 has been playing it since she was 3 and loves it now at almost 5. I quite enjoy and it is usually over fairly quickly.

DeanImpala67 · 05/10/2019 12:23

Haba Games do lots of great children's games, mine love Rhino Hero and Wild Vikings.
