Someone has made a claim on my insurance for an accident that didn't happen?

I got home from work yesterday and had a letter from my insurance company saying they needed to speak to me about the claim a third party has made about me in regards to a crash that happened last weekend, however this crash certainly didn't happen.

I rang my insurance straight away who said I have pulled out out of a side road into someone 'at Morrison's' but that there aren't even any details as to which town this Morrison's is allegedly in. I now need to fill in an accident report form and submit it along with as many pictures of my car as possible (I have taken about 20) to show there is no damage to my car. I forgot to ask them on the phone but how can this happen? I understand if someone has accidentally given the wrong reg number but how have they known my insurance details? Or do they not need to know them? I've never been through the claim process before!

I know there's nothing I can do about it but still feeling pretty stressed, has anyone had this happen to them? Is there anything else I need to do?? I'm worried it's going to take months to sort out.

Equally i had a similar thing.
My reg was given for damaging road furniture. I denied this, and although the town it happened in is only an hour or so away i dont think ive ever driven there.

They weren't overly intrested in what i was doing that day(my car was in a carpark with cctv)

They did send out a damage assessor who agreed my car wasnt involved in an accident

Now its resolved it doesnt affect my insurance or anything

It has just happen to DH. Respond to them and tell them where you and your car were at that time.

DH didn't have to do much more than that and now has 2 letters, one saying it is definitely nothing to do with him, the other confirming that his cover will not be effected in any way.

It takes a couple of months but you don't have to do very much other than provide a coherent stayement

It could be an innocent mistake too, I misread numberplate/scribbled handwriting. Insurance companies have this quite often, we only had a partial plate plus car type and they traced it, insurance was barely worth the effort but it got done by the police for hit and run, dui and licence was revoked

They can't tell me what time it happened at so I have no way of proving where I was at that point because I don't know the time. I've sent all the images of my car over so hopefully that will be enough.

I got a letter about an accident in a town about 200 miles away that I have never been to. Luckily I was apparently the victim.

Turned out they'd got one letter wrong on the reg as the car was a totally different make and model. All sorted and taken off my insurance record.

This happened to my other half, and unlike others the insurance company settled the claim even though he wasn't in an accident - apparently it was too much hassle to question it and he didn't have any right to challenge their decision. Fuckers, it still makes me mad

Scratchyfluffface · 05/10/2019 09:52

Just to add he sent them photos of his undamaged car, but they said the claim wasn't worth sending an assessor out to actually look. The most irritating thing wasn't the value of the claim, it's the cost an 'at fault' claim has on his insurance even a couple of years later

This happened to us, only someone who parked next to us claimed we had opened a car door on his car (he hadn't been parked there when we got in and out of the car). Took two years to resolve.

Sorry for the delay in replying but that's what I'm worried about Scratchy. The police aren't involved so they won't be getting cctv from Morrison's, my insurance told me to call 101 which I did but it wasn't logged as they said it wasn't a police matter, and that if it turns out to be cloned plates then my insurers will go to DVLA.

I assume the other insurers would be able to get the cctv from Morrison's though?
