Available over the counter? I'm sleeping terribly and not due to see the GP for another two weeks. Is there anything I can buy that can help?

Some antihistamine make you sleepy.

MayorPrentiss · 04/10/2019 20:09

I take the one a night nytol and it tends to help. The herbal stuff does nothing. You have my sympathy, not being able to sleep is wretched.

Ludos · 04/10/2019 20:16

How do you feel in the morning after nytol?

Go carefully with Nytol - I (occasionally) take a quarter of the recommended dose & sleep for 8 hrs. If I take half the recommended dose I feel terrible the next day. I've never tried taking the full dose

I take these about 45 minutes before I want to go to sleep and they are brilliant. Help you to fall and stay asleep plus no groggy feeling in the morning.

Caramelblonde70 · 04/10/2019 21:06

Piriton (not Pirateze) works although you might feel a bit groggy the next morning if not used to it.

MayorPrentiss · 04/10/2019 21:32

I feel fine with Nytol but DH always feels groggy the next day. Think the Sleepeze at Boots are the same thing without the brand name. Maybe give them a try when you don't have too much to do the next day!

Quiet night from Superdrug are quite good.

I buy an antihistamine drug from ebay or amazon called Kirkland which is helpful. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kirkland-Sleep-Aid-Doxylamine-succinate-25-mg-192-Tablets-Expiration-02-2021-/202779778082
My son who travels abroad a lot for work and needs to be able to sleep when he can, swears by them.

The other thing is Melatonin but I have to say it has no effect on me, it does on many people.

Stefoscope · 05/10/2019 00:46

I've never had much luck with the valerian based herbal sleeping tablets you can buy otc or when I've been prescribed zopiclone in the past. I did start taking some ashwagandha supplements a health food store a few weeks ago and they do seem to be helping me fall to sleep quicker and stay asleep for slightly longer.

Tavannach · 05/10/2019 00:50

I used to get herbal pills called Stressless from Holland and Barrett.

hotdogwoof · 05/10/2019 00:55

Phenergen or nightnurse

Rachelover60 · 05/10/2019 09:26

Oh yes, Phenergan is quite good, generic name is promethazine. Sominex contains promethazine. I've known lots of people knocking themselves out at night with Night Nurse but it doesn't have that effect on everyone.

The valerian stuff has no effect on me so I wouldn't buy Stressless.

All the things we've mentioned are not harmful to use occasionally, just at night. I suppose if you took them all day they would be but the op isn't looking to sleep all day.

Chloe9 · 05/10/2019 09:36

Nytol (or unbranded diphenhydramine) or phenergan (or unbranded promethazine) are both available over the counter. I find half a nytol or half a phenergan help but don't make me groggy, whereas a whole tablet can make me groggy the next day, but I know people who say it doesn't have much effect on them at all so it really depends on the person, so start on a smaller dose and see how you go

Ludos · 05/10/2019 09:36

Do you know if any are safe to take with sertraline?
