And the yeast says BB 30.09.2016, will my bread be toxic?

Or look anything like bread?

Weevils will have shit in the flour.

FairyJuice · 03/10/2019 10:57

The yeast may not work, I had some that was a few months out and the bread didn't rise. Also, the flour may have those little wormy things in it if it's that long out.

Lamentations · 03/10/2019 10:58

Weevils will be obvious though. Little grey insects crawling about. If it's not moving eat it.

I decant my flour, so I wouldn't know the date on the packet. I'd use them both tbh your going to be baking it in an oven at probably close to 180-200° should kill off anything harmful.

Beamur · 03/10/2019 10:58

It will be long past its best and won't make great bread. I'd bin it.

DeadDoorpost · 03/10/2019 10:59

@Soola you beat me to it 😂😂

OP, my DB went to use barely out of date flour and there were weevils crawling all in it. I wouldn't risk it.

Gribbie · 03/10/2019 11:00

Plain flour with no signs of weevils - I’d use.
Self raising flour - i’d not use as it very probably won’t rise
Yeast - I wouldn’t use as it very probably won’t raise

sparklefarts · 03/10/2019 11:02

Can you get those bugs if your flour was out straight into, and stored in, an air tight plastic container?

GymNovice · 03/10/2019 11:03

No obvious wormy things. I've had those in new flour before, isn't it a case of either the flour has them or it doesn't?

So if it doesn't rise, I should chuck it?

Lamentations · 03/10/2019 11:04

Yes the eggs are already present and they hatch out. I've had them in rice stored on an airtight tub.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/10/2019 11:07

Won't be toxic but might be crap bread. I'd probably use the stuff and if it doesn't work chuck it all out.

I think I found bugs of some description in my rice the other day. I put it into soak and then found a load of tiny grey things floating on top of the water. I couldn't see any in the rice and there's hardly any left, but I did feel bad about drowning a load of tiny critters.

GymNovice · 03/10/2019 11:12

Ok, it's brown flour. It's mixed so if it doesn't rise it will be apple pie for tea tonight Grin

Reallybadidea · 03/10/2019 11:13

The flour is probably OK if it doesn't have creepy crawlies in it. The yeast may be too old though. I dissolve a tsp of yeast in a small glass warm water with a tsp of sugar.if it develops a frothy head within 15/20 minutes then it's still alive. If not I'd chuck the yeast and buy more.

Reallybadidea · 03/10/2019 11:16

OK if you have already mixed the dough then I'd cover the bowl and put it in the airing cupboard or oven at about 40C to give it a fighting chance. It might take longer to rise than the recipe says.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 03/10/2019 11:17

I'd use them both tbh your going to

Totally expected that sentence to end "die at some point anyway" 😆

Moonmelodies · 03/10/2019 11:17

How would the weevils get there?

GymNovice · 03/10/2019 11:21

If not I'd chuck the yeast and buy more.
If I was going out to the shop, I would buy a loaf of bread Grin

Teddybear45 · 03/10/2019 11:23

The flour is okay and you can always sieve the insects out if needed. The yeast won’t rise though - best to get individual sachets so they stay fresh

StarryNightWithGrazingDeer · 03/10/2019 11:23

Envynot envy

MashedSpud · 03/10/2019 11:24

Buy new ingredients.

Why go through all the faff of making bread to end up with a flatbread.

GymNovice · 03/10/2019 11:25

Because it's more of a faff to go to the shop!

GymNovice · 03/10/2019 17:02

It rose. A bit. I think! I've fed a slice to the DC, they said it was nice and keep asking for a second slice i.e. they're still alive Grin

Whatstodo2019 · 03/10/2019 18:25

Did you eat some yourself?

GymNovice · 03/10/2019 18:53

Well, only after the kids had of course Wink

Yes I did . It was foul. DH ate some and said it was very tasty, if a little undercooked. All three want to know when I'm going to make it again... Confused

RingtheBells · 03/10/2019 18:55
