I'm in Scotland and we go guising. There's a big halloween event at the botanic gardens so we will go to that and then have a party at the house on halloween for DD and her friends.

Another Scot here, we go guising, my younger DC have school and club parties, we may or may not do an organised event but always do pumpkin, gingerbread house, dooking for apples and treacle scones.

Houses around ours put up decorations, have open house parties and a couple do a full walk through of their house with games, and panto type shows(!)

I'm Irish and Halloween has always been big here, even my 80yo mum says they went trick or treating as kids.
We usually have a small party at ours and then go trick or treating, light a bonfire in the garden and toast marshmallows if dry.
It's fun!

We decorate the house, carve pumpkins etc so children know they can knock. It gets quite busy but they're all really polite and do dress up.

We get sweets in for the odd trick or treater that finds our house, but nothing otherwise. DD is at university and will probably be partying.

Loads! We visit a pumpkin patch and get about 10 to carve (I am ACE at carving Grin), I go mad decorating the garden and path to make it spooky for trick or treaters, we have a special Halloween-themed dinner... DS is only 2 so not old enough to trick or treat, but next year he'll go for sure!

Every year I have a party kids and adults I absolutely love it I have more Halloween decorations that Xmas ones.
But this year it's just a small party for the kids as I'm pregnant and feeling really crap will make up for it next year I'm in Scotland too everyone I know celebrates it in some way.

Normally have a big party where adults get shitfaced but have recently decorated and my house gets trashed so not sure whether to do one yet. I do enjoy them, just not clearing up the next day whilst hanging out my arse

It's a bit mad where we live, and DH aren't interested (no kids). And it frightens the living shit out of the cats.

We go and have our flu shots and hide in the pub till it's all over Grin

We get a whole load of Halloween themed sweets, carve a pumpkin and watch a Christmas film!

I do as little as possible for it. Used to have big parties for the dc then had another dc and now have 2 of their birthdays in the week after so could do without the extra mess, faff and expense of hosting a third (and entirely unnecessary) party.
Obviously parents of dc felt the same as none of them have hosted a party since i stopped - don’t blame them either!
My dc carve pumpkins and go trick or treating while I stay at home and listen for the doorbell.

I'm from Northumberland, when I was young we would go round asking 'penny for Halloween' and there would be the occasional kids' party with bobbing for apples and stuff, though there was no dressing up. Now, I don't have children and just can't be arsed with any of it and we keep the kitchen dark (our main entrance is at the back) as I don't want to encourage the kids around here as it's mainly teenagers and there aren't many little ones.

IME Halloween is only a "thing" if you have young children.

Party at daughters 👍 hopefully

I may go ahem slightly overboard. House usually looks like a scene from a horror film, I take the day off work to decorate and spend at least a million pound on the sweets. Get hundreds of kids calling and I am satisfied if at least a few are too scared to come in the gate👹

Oh yes, I love Hallowe'en and I'm scouring Pinterest for ideas .

I really really want to do Evil Dolls ( buy some cheapie dolls and put those Vampire teeth in their mouths -cut out space with a knife . And Zombie eyes ) but it might be too much . Our ToT tend to be youngish

I get 2-3 pumpkins , - non scary faces and LED candles , some ravens , spider webs . .....looking forward to it .

Off to search.....

I was browsing today and thought just how much plastic tat is out there Sad

Never really thought about it before I love Hallowe'en decorations but it is one day .
I usually make as much as I can myself and re-use loads of my decs each year .

I wonder if the shops will cut back on what they stock?

Decorate outside, and Windows, i have years old decs but can't use them like i used to outside our new house its a shame.

Get in loads if sweets for all the guisers. Halloween is a great night here (Scotland also)
Kids all dress up even young teens, and do something for their sweets.
I do 4 or 5 or 6 pumpkins (put myself through torture every year as I like doing intricate ones🙄 keep saying this year I will cut down!)

Primary schools have great parties run by parents. Used to be great fun when my kids were younger.

It's a lot of work but the kids are lovely to see in their costumes with their awful jokes and singing songs.

Nothing apart from sweets for trick or treaters

Report
DrCoconut · 04/10/2019 22:01

Nothing at all. I don't answer the door after dark unless I'm expecting someone or they clearly identify themselves as someone I know. I wish people would not come round knocking for Halloween, it's a nuisance and most of them are well into secondary school to look at them.

I;m in Scotland too- it;s big here, streets are full of children and adults guising. I decorate the house and front porch, buy in lots of sweets, Usually have 40 or so children at the door.

The dcs invite some friends over and have scary film night with lots of sweets and snacks.
We put some decorations up outside and get sweets in for trick or treaters.

We dont do anything. A local country park does a "pumpkin festival" in mid october and we go to that, but that's more pumpkin / harvest themed than Halloween.

I guess when DD is older she will want to go trick or treating but I'll be putting it off as long as I can.

Report
Barbarara · 05/10/2019 01:13

I go overboard. Pumpkin carving, home made brack with the usual choking hazards, bobbing for apples, apple on a string. We have friends over for a gruesome dinner and the dc go trick or treating.
I decorate but mostly using black paper silhouettes on the windows and if it’s dry cardboard tombstones in the garden. We have a skeleton that gets up to some nonsense but that’s our only bit of plastic. It’s fairly tame as we have a lot of very young children calling.
